I don't get it. why would they not use the actor that has established the role?
well, i will never watch this show for the exact same reason why i have never and will never watch Buffy (that's right, i said it) because they didn't cast Kristy Swanson (and hate Sara Michelle Gellar).
owell, such is life

They said right from the start that Justin Hartley wasn't going to play the Green Arrow so not sure why you guys seems surprised and upset about it? While I would have liked Justin to continue to portray the Green Arrow as well, I can see why they chose to cast another actor in the role too. They just want to start out fresh without any ties to Smallville. I personally am excited about the possibily of Arrow becoming a new series regardless of who is playing the Green Arrow. Come on guys! You haven't even seen a single promo for the show yet! At least wait and give it a shot before slamming the door shut on this show.

I thought he was still signed with CW to do a pilot for them? What a waste. Or at least get someone else who was on Smallville

OMG. I had a feeling you would catch that one but it is true as far as i'm concerned, Kristy Swanson is the only TRUE slayer. that would be like having an uncharted movie, and casting Mark Wahlberg. . ..wait a second. . dammit

I didn't even like the movie very much. it was a good idea, but I thought it hit it's real brilliance as a TV series. Even Joss Whedon, who wrote the screenplay thought it was kind of a bastard child. It was a start. And for someone to take that and be able to craft it into something as brilliant and iconic as BTVS was unheard of.
And I've still got a soft spot for Willow.

too bad the GA movie was never made. GREEN ARROW: ESCAPE FROM SUPERMAX would have Ollie thrown in prison with supervillains, and have to fight his way out again a bunch of B-list villains..... Ollie cracking the skull of The Penguin would be kinda funny, but is there sequel material? GREEN ARROW: ESCAPE FROM SIX FLAGS: MAGIC MOUNTAIN doesn't have the same ring to it.

You seem to be right, Spoonie: From Entertainment Weekly: Why did The CW’s Arrow producers not cast Smallville‘s Green Arrow played by Justin Hartley? Well, if you’ve seen the pilot, you know why Stephen Amell was cast. It’s just a very different take on the character and a much more physical role. But let’s hear it from executive producer Marc Guggenheim: “We certainly wanted to chart our own course and destiny,” he told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour Monday. “Justin is a terrific Arrow.” Guggenheim, noting he was borrowing the following comparison, added: “Michael Keaton [as Batman] doesn’t affect your love for Christian Bale and Christian Bale doesn’t affect your love for Adam West … multiple iterations are possible.” More here: insidetv.ew.com/2012/07/30/arrow-cast/And from TV Guide: This iteration will pull more directly from the comics, specifically Green Arrow: Year One and Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters. "It's really a point of inspiration that sets up our world," executive producer Marc Guggenheim told reporters at CW's Television Critics Association fall TV previews on Monday. "We've already taken a fair number of liberties with the character. For example, in the comics both his parents are dead, but we're keeping Oliver's mother alive. Oliver didn't have any siblings and we gave him a sister." To be fair, it's also not the same show at all. "We're certainly exploring the nature of vigilantism," Guggenheim says. "One of the things you'll see in the early episodes is the Arrow, like in the pilot, always gives the bad guy of the week the opportunity to do the right thing, and that's only one of the moral guidelines that we're establishing. But also, when he kills, he'll kill for necessity, for a reason, it's not random violence. We'll face the issues of his mortality head-on."
