I loved it. Give it a 10. One of the best episodes of the season, I think. I just wish there was a little acknowledgement between the brothers that showed Dean that his little brother was not alright.

I agree, best ep of the season! Maybe in top ten of whole show! How awesome was Lucifer? "The rapier wit- the wittier rape", "You're giving me chills." Dean was awesome, too- got himself out of those ropes. Plus we got the AMULET in the flashbacks! And most of all, for me- How awesome was SAM? Sam was the bomb. Truly the spoiler of "Sam will need to let Lucifer in" couldn't have turned out in a more "brotherly love" perfect kind of way. Here is a FACT people-
Sam sacrificed his very SANITY, so that he could find his brother! Despite the decades of torture, Sam let him in, because he NEEDED HIM TO FIND DEAN, AND DEAN IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN SAM'S LIFE.
Suck on THAT, Sam haters!

Luci and Sam need their own show. Seriously. I would pay good money to see them banter for an hour like this. Luci is just so damned entertaining! One part evilest overlord ever, one part five year old that just wants to be acknowledged. His teasing of Sam, with the not at all subtle digs on what had gone on between them had me both chilled and giggling. So much fun! And what a novelty it was to not have Dean sitting and moaning about what a crap hand he was dealt in life. They had a job to do (taking care of a demon that they thought they'd put down long ago) and Dean did it with minimal protest. And how ironic was it that Dean would get his best life advice from a serial killer? That having a purpose and doing it well was the way to be happy in life? Well, Dean has a habit of listening to those he should *coughCastielcough* so even though Bobby and Frank and even Sam have basically been telling him the same thing, maybe this time it'll sink in. I knew that Jeffrey was going to kill the puppy the moment he got ahold of her. Bastard. Am very glad he didn't adopt a cat or I would have been screaming at the TV for hours. Probably the best ep so far of the season and one of my top ten of the series.

I will admit I don't watch Supernatural, but I had planned on watching this episode last night but was too busy. I'll be watching the rerun though... I am trying to get into it as I need another series to watch.
The statement about killing the dog and saying at least it's not a cat made me kinda laugh because it reminded me of that one movie I went to go see with a friend at college, 'The Roommate' probably not the best idea... lol. I was visiting another friend that loves cats and I mentioned the movie to her and she started like a two hour rant about how horrible that was!

I love all animals and absolutely hate to see them harmed (even if its fictional) and I have had dogs, cats, fish, rats, birds, lizards... you name it... at some point in my life. But cats hold a special place in my heart, especially because my current pet is a gorgeous black cat. Each time the boys find a witch's stash and find the bones of a black cat, I can't help from cringing. And needing to give my Luna a hug. It is funny that given all the women that Jeffrey butchered, what seems to get the fans (and Dean) most outraged was him killing that adorable little dog.

We were friends for like more than 10 years... well, we started talking again recently... but when we were little, I used to joke that her house was a zoo! She had just about every single pet you can imagine!

I'm confused...........WHO hates Sam? Pretty exciting episode but the whole thing about Jeffrey faking possession confused me. How could he have faked the black eyes? As for Dean ONLY getting upset when Jeffrey killed the dog....c'mon, he rescues people in danger every episode. And we've seen from other episodes that he has an extra piece of venom in his heart for the baddies who also kill animals. Remember the rabbit in Malleous Mallificarum?

Is it just me that the poor trusting doggy carrying his cone of shame while following Jeffery reminded me of poor trusting Sammy carrying the voicemail of shame while following Lucifer/Dean out of the house and into the warehouse in "Hello Cruel World"? Just me? Okay.
Great episode. Sammy is the toughest guy in the universe and he will somehow get through this little setback, hopefully with Dean's help.

Why, why, why did the writers have to ruin one of the best episodes of the whole frikkin series by killing the sweet little puppy? It's rare that show fools me but I didn't catch on to Jeff till they went to the warehouse. I was worried about the puppy but was shocked when he killed the poor thing. I adore animals and can't watch anything where an animal gets hurt, so despite the fact that we got Sammy angst galore and him deliberately talking to Luci even though he knows what's going to happen to him so he can save Dean, I can't watch this episode again.
If it was a cat...oh my God. As it was I screamed when puppy died and it made 3 of my cats jump who were laying by me.

I'm more partial to dogs, so at least now I have a fair warning to not pay attention to the television when he kills that poor little puppy.

I liked this episode.
I felt bad for Sam, continuing to try and keep Lucifer at bay and finally--probably feeling like he had no other option--gives in and "talks" to Lucifer.
That being said, I really liked Sam in this one. He just kept plugging away, despite Lucifer's interference. I did find Lucifer sort of funny in the episode. His constant poking at Sam to get Sam to talk to him.
One thing I did wish was that Dean would have noticed Sam struggling a bit more. I know they were split up for a portion of the episode and earlier when they were together, Sam seemed to hold up like he has been. However, clearly, at the end, one could see Sam struggling and I don't necessarily know that he could have held it in if Dean had seen him, instead of just falling on the bed. You could be right janice, that some of the drug was still in Dean's system and that could be why he didn't really pay attention to what Sam was doing.
To be fair though, we knew Sam was struggling, so maybe even if Dean had seen him at the end when he sat on the bed, Sam might have tried to pass it off like one of those other times--like what happened in TGND when Sam spaced out in front of Dean and Bobby.
One thing that I wasn't expecting was when the people in the library started banging their heads repeatedly on the tables. That was freaky.

How come the demon went into the boy instead of Jeffery?
Jeffery kidnapped the boy to make the Wicca mom give Jeffery the spell to summon the demon to possess him again, right?

One thing that became clear on a repeated viewing is that Dean is showing absolutely no sign that he's at all aware that things are not all right with Sam. He's so completely focused on getting Dick Roman, or dealing directly with the job at hand that he's completely tuned out everything else. So long as Sam is up and walking and not bleeding all over everything, it's one less thing for Dean to worry about. Dean is clearly not dealing with anything more than he absolutely has to and getting Roman is priority #1.
This is really upsetting for me because it's not as if Sam is actively hiding his coping mechanisms or the fact that he is in some kind of distress. At one point, Dean was so keenly attuned to everything going on with Sam. He knew when Sam was upset or ill, usually long before Sam was willing to bring it up. But now? They come back to their motel room and Dean just plops down on his face without even glancing at Sam.
I don't have it in my heart to really blame Dean or to call him a bad brother because he does have a lot on his plate to deal with. He's still reeling over losing Bobby and getting revenge is his primary focus. But Sam is heading for a very steep crash and the fallout is going to be monumentally ugly. If Dead thinks he's overwhelmed with guilt over things he couldn't prevent now, what the hell is he going to feel when he sees his brother going completely to peices and he realizes that not only did he do nothing to try to prevent it from happening, but he didn't even see what was going on right before his eyes.

That's the only thing I was upset about in the episode. Was that Dean did not even acknowledge Sam and the distress he was in. I can't buy that, I can't buy that Dean has all this guilt and pain of two people he lost in his life, but basically ignores that one person who has been there for ALL his life. Dean used to sense when ever Sam wanted to talk, or when something was bothering him, not this time. It's a little off putting and don't buy it.

What you and Ravanne said caught my attention too. First, Dean easily got caught by Jeffery, which until now was Sam's department when he was easily caught by the vampire thingies. Because Dean was in danger, Sam *had* to talk to Lucifer to figure out how to save Dean, and that fallout is letting Lucifer back in to torture him. Right now Dean appears to be oblivious but we know Dean is a smart hunter. When Sam finally breaks down, Dean may figure out the pattern that led to the breakdown. What I don't want is another excessive self inducing guilt by Dean but for him to take actions. Sadly, I do buy it. Even before Dean went to hell he mostly wanted his little brother to follow the script, it's part of the fallout of being more of a father figure to Sam than a brother. Post-hell Dean was even more problematic i.e. he never asked Sam his thoughts or feelings about being forced into a destiny to host the greatest evil of all times. I think Dean didn't want to know because it won't change anything, meaning even if Dean got insights to Sam's thoughts Dean still can't do anything to fix the problem, so he rather not know.

This season there is nothing from Dean that shows he cares for Sam anymore, which is a big assumption. I mean the second episode this season showed the Dean that I feel in love with, but the later episodes presented a character that wanted to distance himself from the only person who is left in his life. You would think they would be closer because of the problems surrounding them, but no. I guess that's just me.

O come on! Dean tried to talk to Sam. Remember he said 'if there's someone who knows about Hell, it's me,' and Sam pretty much blew him off. Dean helped him hold onto reality by reminding him that hell and reality feel completely different...reminded him about how he, Dean, stitched up the cut in Sam's hand. I think Dean is just honoring Sam's request that he back off. Sam is the one who's not dealing with hell. He's the one who thinks he can deal with it on his own. Remember Dean and Bobby together with Sam and Dean asking Sam, "Is he here now?" and Sam saying yes? Christ, Dean wants to help Sam but SAM WON'T LET HIM.

It's not that Dean can't help Sam. I know that there is a huge limit to what he can actually do. It's the fact that since Bobby died, Dean seems nearly oblivious to the fact that Sam is barely hanging on by his fingernails. After a harrowing case, Dean walks into their motel room and just falls flat on his face. He doesn't even glance back at Sam. If he had, he would have seen that something was very wrong with him. But as I said - Sam was up and walking and not bleeding so the rest isn't on Dean's radar.
To me this is just the biggest sign of just how far from okay Dean himself is. He's so completely focused on getting Roman that very little else really registers with him. Unfortunately it's clear that Dean, in order to keep himself functioning, has developed a significant case of tunnel vision. And he's not going to register that Sam is coming apart at the seams until Sam actually is incapacitated.
There was a time not all that long ago where Sam couldn't so much as stub his toe without Dean being all over him about it. I miss the Dean that cared so much. Right now Dean is so caught up in his own pain that he's missing out on the fact that he's not alone in the losses they suffered, and that the one who should be closest too him is barely hanging on.

Sam is the one who's not dealing with hell. He's the one who thinks he can deal with it on his own. Yeah I think some are discounting the number of times Sam has asked Dean to stop treating him like a kid and to let him deal with things on his own. Sam has told Dean this many times throughout the last several years, and Dean has apologized several times about treating Sam like a kid brother who can't handle things. I think Dean has really tried to let Sam make his own decisions about how he wants to deal with his hallucinations. Because it's something Sam has been very adamant about. For example: SAM: "You know? Sometimes I see Lucifer when I friggin' brush my teeth, but, I don't know, I guess I just finally feel like... my past is my past, and I can move on with my life. You know, hopefully.... You'll get used to it. I mean, I don't want to sound lame, but... I kind of feel good, Dean. "Also SAM: Look, don't be too impressed, man. It's still a Denver scramble up here. I just know my way around the plate now.
DEAN: I'm just saying. It's stupid to think that you need me around all the time. You're a grown-up.
SAM: Right. Sam has not shown any outward signs of problems around Dean, IMO. He even scolded Dean about Dean's behavior in The Slice Girls, but Sam never admitted anything about his own issues and that would have been the perfect opportunity to do so. As Dean said, neither one of them is dealing with things perfectly, but they're doing the best they can. Dean is being the type of brother Sam asked him to be. Dean is allowing Sam to "grow up" and handle things on his own, just as Sam wanted. So if Sam is struggling so much that he can't handle it on his own, then HE needs to be the one to ask for Dean's help. He can't have it both ways... Sam can't tell Dean that he's handling things just fine, that he's happy, and that he feels GOOD, and then expect Dean NOT to trust or believe him about it. Dean has worked too hard over these past few years to accept that Sam is all grown up and to believe Sam when Sam said he doesn't need Dean to take care of him. JMO.

amelianne - Don't forget that nearly the first thing Sam heard when he came too after collapsing after their first confrontation wtih Castiel was Bobby's conversation with Dean about Dean being completely at the end of his mental and emotional rope. The reality of Castiel turning on them just hit home and Dean was not in a place where he could handle one more insurmountable problem. So Sam did the only thing he could do - he minimized what he was going through and did everything he could to in order to avoid giving Dean another burden.
I'm not arguing that Sam hasn't done everything possible to hide just what he's been going through. The point is that Dean knows his brother. He knows that Sam will stay silent even if he was bleeding to death inside. Dean knows what Sam has locked in his head and isn't showing any real awareness right now that it's something to be concerned about. It's like disregarding a patient having cancer just because they're not hooked up to chemotherapy at that given moment.
One thing that has always been a hallmark of Dean's character was his intense awareness of what was going on with Sam. And there is a huge difference between giving someone space and trust to handle things (as Sam was requesting) and just tuning out what's happening altogether (as Dean seems to be doing). Dean's tendency to shove down and ignore things that are too difficult to deal with and just pretend that those things aren't there is going to be disasterous here.
This whole matter really is a sign of just how far apart the Winchesters are from the young men we first met. They're not only not on the same page about things, but are barely speaking the same language. This is not only Dean's fault, but after having it made clear to him that Dean could not handle one more problem before he completely breaks, Sam certainly isn't going to be bringing it up. So you have one person hiding what's happening (to protect the other) and the other just not looking out for signs of things being wrong (because he can't handle it).

It's After a harrowing case, Dean walks into their motel room and just falls flat on his face. He doesn't even glance back at Sam. Aren't you forgetting that: 1: Jeffrey injected Dean with a drug and Dean was unconcious for ? time and 2: Jeffrey bled Dean for his summoning ritual. So maybe Dean didn't just "fall flat on his face" on the bed when they got back to the motel, maybe Dean wasn't able to stay on his feet after being drugged and bled. Of course Dean is obsessed with the Leviathins - THEY KILLED BOBBY. Christ, can't you guys get over the fact that Sam isn't letting Dean in? Dean tried to get Sam to open up to him, but Sam didn't want to let him in. Sometimes even dear, darling Sammy makes mistakes. Not just Dean.

OMG! See Capt Bill!? This is exactly what I was talking about. Sam sacrificed his very sanity to rescue Dean and all I see on the boards is what a JERK Sam is for not running to Dean with his problems.
First, I have NO problem with Dean. He's exhausted and on a revenge trip. If I can't fault Sam for his single minded pursuit of Lilith, then I can't fault Dean either.
Second, I'm GLAD that Dean hasn't interveined. I'm so tired of show constantly telling us that Sam can barely cross the street unless Dean is holding his hand. Ito'd be fine with Dean staying focused on bigmouths, and maybe seeing Sam fix his own problems.
Third, Sam is doing the very BEST that he can, with a terrible situation, and doesn't want to add to Dean's burden, since he's repeatedly said he's at the end of his rope. I can't believe (although I'm not surprised) that instead of being praised for doing anything possible to find Dean, he is being dumped on. Why do some want to dump.on Sam (or Dean) when they were just so awesome? How about the Dean girls be glad that Dean is working on his own issues for a change?

The point is that Dean knows his brother. He knows that Sam will stay silent even if he was bleeding to death inside. Yes but that's why Dean confronted Sam in 7.2. He knew Sam was staying silent and he confronted him about it. But Sam told him he could handle it. And he hasn't said anything to Dean to indicate that he's not still handling it. Right. And not only did Sam tell Dean not to worry about him, but Bobby did as well, even though Dean wanted to argue the point and was still not convinced, Bobby told Dean to knock it off: Bobby to Dean in TGND: "It ain't like he's keeping secrets. What you see is what you get. What's so nuts about calling an upswing?" And then in 7.9, Sam tells Bobby again that he's okay and that seeing Lucifer is "fine" with him. And remember, Bobby scolded Dean back in 5.21 when he told Dean that they were hard on Sam and that Sam can handle Lucifer. And Dean had to accept that. But Dean isn't tuning out Sam. Dean has asked Sam how he's feeling and Sam has told him that that he's "good" and that he's able to handle his hallucinations. We know and Dean knows that Sam uses the finger pressing his scar to help him handle his hallucinations. Sam hasn't made any huge mistakes while on hunts, he's been able to handle his weapons, he's not showing any outward signs of stress beyond what is normal. I don't understand why people think Dean is completely ignoring Sam when he specifically said to Sam that he is just as screwed up as he (Dean) is. Dean is aware, but he's learned his lesson of being overbearing and overprotective. He's learned his lesson that Sam doesn't want Dean to be that way anymore. Sam has told him time and again that he doesn't want Dean to act that way anymore and that Dean needs to let him grow up. Well of course they are both very different people who have grown a lot over the past 7 years. Dean will never be the guy who is all over Sam just because Sam stubs his toe. Dean was told he had to change. Dean was told that he had to let Sam grow up and had to let Sam handle things himself. Dean was told that part of the reason Sam chose to be with Ruby was because the old way Dean was, didn't work for Sam. So Dean had to face this and accept it (and apologize to Sam for the way he was). It seems that every time Dean tries to get too protective (i.e. him not wanting Sam to take on Lucifer at the end of season 5) it comes back to bite him in the butt. Dean is trying to handle his own problems on his own, and he's trying to let Sam handle things on his own as well. I just don't think Dean wants to make the same mistakes over again especially because Sam insists that he is "good" and he's handling things fine. I think it Sam were to actually show that he isn't really handling things very well (in front of Dean) then Dean will take the risk of playing the protective brother again. And yes, subconsciously I think Dean is in denial about the reality of Sam's issues but, my goodness, for anyone to honestly believe that Dean doesn't care about Sam just because he's not (over)reacting every time Sam stubs his toe... I just don't understand this at all.

I do agree that in this instance, Dean most likely collapsed--not in an effort to ignore Sam--but because he probably still had some of the drug in him. Still, it would have been nice if Dean had actually looked at Sam, or at least stayed awake another couple of minutes, and witnessed Sam's white-knuckling his knees.
I understand Sam not saying anything either. Part of it probably is because he trying to handle it on his own. The other, could be that he doesn't to admit why it's getting worse now--meaning in an effort to find Dean, he let Luci in and he wouldn't want Dean to feel guilty about that, thinking Dean has enough stuff he feels guilty about.
If Ghost Bobby really is around, I wish he'd somehow show Dean that Sam's getting worse.

I see where you guys are coming from. My thing is that I am so used to seeing attentive Dean, overbearing Dean, over protective Dean, that's been the Dean I have gotten used to seeing from the past 6 seasons and even the first two episodes of this season. To have Dean do a complete 180 on this character shift is hard to accept. I MISS MY DEAN AND SAM BUT ALSO I SHOULD ACCEPT THE REALITY OF THEIR SITUATION AND THE FACT THEY ARE GROWN MEN THAT HAVE BEEN THROUGH A LOT. Still can't accept that.
