I don't celebrate, but tomorrow is Ash Wednesday. I don't plan to celebrate as such, but it's the beginning of Lent for Christians and, while I don't do it, we're supposed to sacrifice during the weeks before observing the death and resurrection of Jesus.
But that's where this observance comes from.
