insidetv.ew.com/2012/03/02/the-office-revenge-southland-justified-how-i-met-your-mother-spoilers/3/A lot of fans I know outside of here think that John Winchester got retconned into being a bad father. It was suprising to see JDM comment on it. Any new scoop for The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle, or Supernatural? Is there a subfolder in your scoop files for “things that are never gonna happen”? If not, get out the label maker. You see, even though John Winchester hasn’t been on Supernatural in, oh, five years, I still get asked if he’s ever slated for return. So let’s let Jeffrey Dean Morgan put this to bed for good. “Yes, I would go back if they asked me. My stance always is I would love to come back. In fact, they have trashed John so f–king much on that show that I would like to come back just to set the record straight the real way,” he says. “I’m not that bad of a dad. I saved my kids. I went to hell to save my kids. How bad can I be, people? But there are a couple of story lines that I’d like to resolve and more importantly those people mean a lot to me. Jensen [Ackles] introduced me to [girlfriend and White Collar star Hilarie Burton] and they’re family, so it’d be fun to go back. But I don’t think it will ever happen.”

I kind of feel the same way about how the show has turned against John Winchester. He started out as an almost mythical character: strong, determined, smart and a loving but damaged father.
As the seasons have gone on, various characters have started talking trash about John. An absentee father, a father who put too much on his sons, and the like.
I don't think that after so much time, JDM will be back on the show, but it's sad that the writers/producers have decided to make John less a good father operating under extreme conditions, to a dead-beat dad who was barely there for his kids.

JDM has some real big memory problems if he thinks John was a great dad.

I HATED what they did to Daddy Winchester! He loved his sons..and THAT is the most important thing.

I'd say that's debatable- on both points. But I don't have the energy to debate it, so I'll just agree to disagree.

John Winchester did some things that were damaging to his boys. However, I think the good he did outweighted the bad. He went to hell to save Dean. He made certain both of his boys could protect themselves. In fact it did a heck of a lot more for Sam and Dean then Mary did. Mary knew something would be coming in 10 years. However, she didn't protect the house from Demons. She didn't warn John about the big bad. She left everyone unprotected and because of that she caused everything in the first place. Because she died no one blames her. When the truth is John was left to clean up the mess Mary made. That's my take on things.

John's character takes a huge ton a shit because no matter how you cut it, Sam and Dean's childhood (such as it was) sucked. There's no nice way to paint what it was like to never being able to have friends or do the things that normal kids do. Learning how to field strip a rifle in three minutes isn't a good substitute for school field trips. But we have to recognize the fact that the end result left Sam and Dean uniquely equipped to handle everything the supernatural world could throw at that. And in the end, John was more than willing to sacrifice his life to save his sons. That has to count for something.
We also have to recognize the fact that the supernatural world was not going to just leave the Winchesters alone. If John hadn't become a hunter, that wouldn't have stopped YED from coming for Sam. Sam was already marked and would have been taken, more than likely over the bodies of his father and brother. And without the training that he had as a child, Sam would never have survived the trials that the Special Children were put through. And if he had, he never would have developed the emotional fortitude to keep Lucifer from completely dominating him. The lives of the Winchesters would have ended short and very, very bloody.
I don't think that it's any accident that every flaw of John, both those real and those that I feel were highly exaggerated, were brought up the way they were. Dean's idolization of his father was a huge part of his strong roots as a hunter and if the angels wanted Dean to be the mailable tool that they demanded, they had to pretty much destroy all bonds holding Dean to his life and past. So not only did they have to destroy Dean's bond with Sam, but they destroyed Dean's image of his father a well. So much of Dean's identity and love of being a hunter was rooted in his bond with his father, so that was systematically destroyed. The final blow was the discovery of Adam. In one fell swoop, everything Dean thought he knew about who John was as a man and father was destroyed.
I would love JDM to come back and reestablish what it was about John that made him such an engaging character. He always was a deeply flawed individual. Driven to the point of obsession, but who's priority was preserving his family even if it meant turning them into soldiers. It was because of John that Sam and Dean have survived what they did and in my opinion, it's past time for John to regain his place in the SPN mytharc.
