I have been having internet problems today, and have spent the past 5 hours or so just trying to get online. Right now it's up, but don't know how long it will last.

Anyway, I'd planned to read further into Gatsby this evening before we talked, but as of now I'm still on the first chapter, although just two pages from the end.

Was the 7pm Eastern Daylight Time or Central Daylight Time? I'm on Central.

So far who is your fave character?
Mine would be Gatsby even though hes making things up to make himself sound better hes still only doing so for a chance at love again.
My most hated character would be tom,from what I can tell is that daisy is a delight and could have had a great romance with Gatsby or could have simply had another man to treat her decent but it seems as though shes in a way obsessed with tom. Perhaps shes only obsessed with the idea of tom of a husband to give her what she feels she deserves

And he could at least b discreet for goodness sake
I feel a little dislike for Jordan shes too haughty for my tastes
I love the way the book is written the words seem to flow kind of like when you read poetry

my heart is already breaking for Gatsby whom is destroyed by daisy twice in his life. I cant help but think of the ending
The last time I read this I remember daisy being so indifferent about gatsbys death I hope perhaps I read it wrong. I hope she at least cries

Yes, they still haven't fixed it yet. If I'm lucky I can get on every once in a while to make a post, but it takes a long time, as my modem is constantly resetting itself.

I'll go on and read through chapter 8 too, and hope I can get on soon when it's fixed to discuss the book. I'm enjoying Gatsby a lot.

My favorite character so far?

The puppy.

Or the drunk guy after the party who didn't realize his car wouldn't run with one of the wheels missing.

No, seriously, at this point it would have to be Jordan for me. There's something about the way she speaks that reminds me a lot of Lady Duff in Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, although Jordan as a professional golfer is much less languid than Lady Duff.

And I think that may be why I like her better than the other characters in Gatsby so far. She's the only one other than Nick, the narrator, who seems to actually do anything. I do find her 'career' more interesting that Nick's, though.

Both Daisy and Jordan are more interesting than the male characters to me, even when they're just lounging around bored, jaded, and witty. I guess I've known too many guys like Tom and Gatsby, not be put off a bit by them.

It's been so long since I read the book that it's like reading it completely anew, as I've forgotten most of the plot in the ensuing years.

One thing I can guarantee you is that by the end of the book we will figure out the answer to that question for ourselves. My graduate work was done in literature and creative writing, so I have no doubt we can answer that question and others as well.

Although I do have to warn you that the answer may well lie in the technical side of storytelling and have more to do with dramatic tension and resonance. Whatever it may be, we'll figure it out, though.
