We haven't talked about Purgatory much lately.
Any new thoughts or ideas?

Purgatory holds the most powerful and undesirable creatures known to Heaven and Earth. The question has come up several times about what keeps them locked in Purgatory. I thought perhaps it was their souls that kept them locked in. That would explain why Dean was stuck. Castiel would be able to disappear because he had no soul. One problem with that theory is that no way would Castiel desert Dean just because he could.
Then I suggested Crowley pulled Castiel out for his own purposes.
Let's think about the creatures who have escaped Purgatory and how they managed it.
Dr. Visyak escaped when Lovecraft and his buddies opened a small doorway to Purgatory.
Mother of All escaped when her Dragons performed a ritual to open Purgatory.
Leviathans escaped because Crowley brainwashed my angel into helping him open Purgatory.
The one thing all of these have in common is that Purgatory must be opened from the outside. It cannot be opened from the inside. So if Castiel is out, someone pulled him out. For Dean to get out, someone has to pull him out. So the big thing for early S8 is not when Dean escapes, it's going to be how he escapes. If Meg pulls him out somehow, let's fire Carver.

Well, now that we hear that Sam and Dean will already be back together in the first episode .... only " time will have passed," and that we'll only find out about what happened while Dean was there and Sam was on his own in "flashbacks" I guess the whole Purgatory discussion becomes moot. Crap. I was hoping season 8 would go a different route. Seems were stuck with angels................AGAIN. At least we'll have demons, too. I am not happy.

When they do flashbacks, do you think they could do extensive ones like in Unforgiven? That would be more satisfying than 10 second blinks like Dean on those horrible chains or Sam's hell-fire visions. I want to see flashbacks of Dean outsmarting some monsters.

I'm just hoping they're more substantial than the flashbacks Dean had of Hell. But I'm not holding my breath.

The following comment gives me the most hope that we will see actual details of Purgatory rather than brief clips of flashbacks: "As was mentioned in the panel, Dean's time in Purgatory will be told primarily through flashbacks throughout the season. Padalecki said that Dean's time in Hell wasn't really shown, but they will be showing his experience this time." One can only hope.

I don't know why but I'm feeling more optomistic about this Purgatory-flashback thingy. Sounds like they'll actually be fleshing out these flashbacks as opposed to earlier seasons when all we got were flashes of Dean and Sam and what they went through in Hell and the cage. I hope I'm not setting myself up for disappointment.

I'm feeling hopeful, too. And I am praying to Eve that the monster who leaves with Dean does not look like Dick. OK, I know I'm shallow, but I like pretty boys.

I heard he was some guy from Battlestar Galactica. Hmmmmm, did I get that right? Could be good or not. Some of those guys were pretty good looking but there were more than a few that were goofy looking.

If it's young Adama from Battlestar, that would be nice. Hmmm, I'll have to check.

From what I've heard, he's playing a vampire who helps Dean get out of Purgatory and they have interaction in the "real" world. So this character is going to be around for several episodes. I wonder how Dean is going to cope with "working" with a vampire since he is usually the one to say.....'whatever is supernatural, we kill.' Could be good. I'm hoping........

For a little while, he might be too grateful to plot against the vampire, but I don't think that will last long. Dean hates to let anyone control him. I remember how pissed off he was about Crowley making them work for him. Maybe the favor he owes the monster will be a one-shot deal. Think of the ramifications. If Dean owes his freedom to the vampire, and the alpha vamp rules the vampire, he could yank Dean's chains big time.

I'm thinking of a millions scenarios......I just hope Jeremy doesn't disappoint us the way Sera did. I can remember being excited she was taking over after Kripke left, thinking that she had been there since the beginning and knew the kind of show he had created and would keep the stories as good as the first 5 seasons. Well, we all know how that went. So I will keep a good thought and hope for the best. Purgatory could be a great jumping off point for lots of new entanglements for Dean and Sam. I hope that storyline isn't wrapped up in the first 5 minutes.

Spoilers regarding Purgatory“… Collins is still recurring on the cult hit, which begins its eighth season on Wed., Oct. 3 on The CW. His character, the angel Castiel, has had a fairly tumultuous journey since his introduction in Season 4, but Collins promised a little more equilibrium when the show returns. "I will tell you that Cas ... for the most part, I would characterize him as sane, so his marbles are back, his screws aren’t quite as loose as they were at the end of last season," he teased. "But he’s full of remorse and regret and self-loathing, and furthermore, as if that weren’t enough, he is beaten and battered and stuck in Purgatory, so he’s in a pretty shitty situation ... But [his powers] work, for the most part, in Purgatory. He’s not totally flaccid there, which is good, but it’s Purgatory, so it’s not perfect."When we spoke, Collins was in the process of filming Episode 5, and confirmed that so far, he's only read scenes involving Castiel in Purgatory. He's also had the opportunity to interact with Ty Olsson's Benny, the "strange bedfellow" (and dangerous vampire) that showrunner Jeremy Carver promised would become entangled with Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Castiel while they're trapped in that hostile environment. "I’ve had a few scenes with him so far," Collins said. "[Dean and Benny’s] relationship is budding, and I think Cas is a bit jealous of it, as a matter of fact."” www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/31/supernatural-misha-collins-charity_n_1845655.html

Interesting theories, I'm still not convicted Crowley is a Demon. I have never seen his eyes turn black. Also Cas helped fake Crowley's death in Season 6 so Crowley's "bones" and "son" might all be a part of the trick. It's possible that Crowley is a purgatory native in disguise. That is now he knew what happened to Dean and Cas. I don't think Cas can get out on his own. This prison was meant to trap Leviathans who are so powerful they can kill angels. That means their prison would be really powerful as well. I'm also wondering if Cas is still crazy and why he left Dean alone. If Sam doesn't release Dean maybe Frank does. Because I refuse to believe he is dead. He is my favorite new character. ;D

Hi Evil1 I hope they are hiding Frank to use as a surprise like they did when Crowley returned. His name was not used in the opening credits because they did not want to blow the surprise. I agree with you. I have no idea how a Purgatory monster can bust his way out if the Leviathans could not do it. I have no theories on that.

He set up a front as a cross roads demon so no one would send him back. ;D

He's a terrific character and Dean and Sam need someone with his smarts and snark to help them out now that Bobby, Rufus and Ellen are gone. Kill off Garth......BRING BACK FRANK!!!!!

So, now that we've seen our first picture of Dean in Purgatory, I'm wondering what it will look like (beyond, of course, what we saw at the end of season 7)?
We know Benny is a vampire. How did he get into Purgatory? What purpose does Purgatory serve in the Supernatural world? Well I suppose they've told us that -- God put monsters in there to keep them out of the world.
I am really looking forward to the season starting. Just over 20+ days to go!

Looks like we'll be seeing lots of Purgatory flashbacks in season 8. Wonder how Dean came to work with Benny and not Castiel? I can hardly wait for the season to start with Carver in the driver's seat.

Did Dean need to be so darn cryptic about Castiel? He lost it, huh? Dean better hope Meg does not find out he left her Clarence in Purgatory.

Ha! True, except that Meg may have more, shall we say, pressing issues, since she is in Crowley's clutches.

I don't think Crowley "sent" Dean and Castiel to Purgatory, I believe he just knew that being close to Dick when he exploded would pull them in with him.
Remember when he told Sam that the God's weapons should come with instructions and warnings? I took that to mean Crowley was aware of possible collateral damage and the boys were not. And Castiel, being somewhat disoritented (or something), either wasn't aware or didn't mention it.
What say you?

I am beginning to think the columnist threw that theory out there just to stir things up. I have seen no other mention of Crowley sending Dean and Castiel to Purgatory. Crowley is an opportunist, so he stepped in. If being close to the weapon at the time it killed Dick was the problem, that would be awful. I think they should ask Kevin about any safety features written on the other tablets.

I don't think Crowley sent them to Purgatory, but I do think he had a very good idea as to what would happen. He did tell Sam afterward that that bone had a "kick" So I think he knew what could happen when he "helped " the boys.

The more I think about it, the more shocked I am that Sam would just leave hunting and not try to search for Dean. Dean tried looking for Sam after he went to the cage, but Sam just decides to throw in the towel and walk away from the life? You'd have thought he might have tried for a couple of months to find out what happened to Dean (and maybe Castiel ). Some brother.
