The Burglary Job
A man was gunned down in his flat by a burglar, who then ransacked the flat. The case was placed in the capable hands of Inspector Baldwin of Scotland Yard.
Baldwin’s investigation revealed that one man had planned the crime, another had carried it out, and a third had acted as lookout and fourth one was somehow present unaware of plan. Baldwin discussed the case over lunch with an old friend, Detective Thompson.
“It’s quite a case,” Thompson remarked. “Any suspects?”
“Yes indeed. Four. We have conclusive evidence that three of those four were responsible for the crime,” said Baldwin. “The fourth had no prior knowledge of the crime and is completely innocent. The problem is that we’re not sure which of the four are the planner, the gunman, the lookout, and the innocent bystander,” he added.
“I see.” said Thompson while drinking his tea. “What do you know about them at this point?”
“Well, the names of the four are Erick, Joss, Hewitt, and Cooper. Cooper and Joss play tennis together every Saturday. They’re an odd pair! Cooper can’t drive, and Joss has been out of Prison for only a year,” Baldwin answered.
“We know that Erick and Cooper kept the flat under the surveillance for several days just before the day the crime was committed, on the 17th. Hewitt and Erick, with their wives, had dinner together on the 12th.”
“We also know that the gunman spent the week before the crime in Edinburgh, and that the innocent bystander was acquainted with the planner and the gunman, but not with the lookout.”
“That’s very helpful,” said Thompson with a smile. “Baldwin, your case is complete!”
Who were the gunner, the planner, the lookout, and the bystander?

The Burglary Job: Planner - Eric Gunman - Joss Lookout - Cooper Innocent - Hewitt The gunman can't be Eric or Cooper because they were doing surveillance the week that the gunman was out of town. Hewitt, with Eric, was also at dinner than week, leaving only Joss. The innocent would not have been performing surveillance, eliminating Eric and Cooper. Joss is eliminated by the fact that he is the gunman, leaving only Hewitt. Either Eric or Cooper may be either the Planner - who Hewitt did know, or the Lookout who he didn't know. It is explicitly stated that Hewitt did know Eric, so Eric could be the Planner. While it isn't stated that Hewitt did NOT know Cooper (or Joss, for that matter), it is a reasonable inferrence that Eric is the Planner, leaving Cooper as the Lookout.

A man wanted to enter an exclusive club but did not know the password that was required. He waited by the door and listened. A club member knocked on the door and the doorman said "twelve." The member replied "six " and was let in. A second member came to the door and the doorman said "six." The member replied "three" and was let in. The man thought he had heard enough and walked up to the door. The doorman said "ten" and the man replied "five." but he was not let in. What should have he said? Three - the number of letters in the challenge question, "Ten"

A man drove past a billboard on the way to work each morning. On that billboard, on both sides so it could be seen from either direction, was the temperature in Fahrenheit on the left and in Celsius on the right. One blustery Fall day, the man noticed it was unusually warm. He looked at the temperatures on the billboard and said, "That is warm for Fall." Severe weather rolled through the area, and it was even windier, with snow flurries, when he left work that afternoon. The man was, however, very shocked at the change in the temperature. It had been so warm that morning, and he was unprepared. He rushed to his car and turned on the heat full blast. As he passed the billboard, he was amazed at the temperature change, until he noticed the Celsius temperature displayed was the same as it had been that morning. What was wrong with the billboard? In the morning, it was 50 degrees, by afternoon it had dropped to 14 degrees, both fahrenheit. Celsius - the morning temp was 10 degrees above zero. In the afternoon, it had dropped to -10, but the minus symbol was apparently burned out! (Unlikely as it may sound, such a wild temp swing can easily, and often does happen where I currently live)

Your reasoning on the gunman is correct. While your elimination of Eric & Cooper from being innocent is logical, I don't think it works for how the riddle is *supposed* to be solved. The solution goes: Joss acquainted with Cooper (tennis), Cooper knows Erick (surveillance duty), and Eric acquainted with Hewitt (dinner). Inspector Baldwin said that the innocent bystander was acquainted with the planner and the gunman (Joss), but not with the lookout. That obviously states that Cooper is the innocent bystander. Answer: Joss is the gunman, Eric is the planner, Hewitt is the lookout, and Cooper is the innocent bystander.

Three friends check into a hotel for the night and the receptionist tells them that the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay him $10 and go to their room.
A few minutes later, the receptionist realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellboy to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in.
The bellboy sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day!
Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellboy pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent.
Where did the other dollar go?

Einstein's Intelligence Quiz Einstein wrote this quiz last century. He said that 98% of the people in the world cannot solve the quiz.
There are 5 houses in 5 different colors In each house lives a person with a different nationality These 5 owners drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar, and keep a certain pet No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar or drink the same drink. Here's the question: Who owns the fish? The Brit lives in a red house The Swede keeps dogs as pets The Dane drinks tea The green house is on the left of the white house The green house owner drinks coffee The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill The man living in the house right in the middle drinks milk The Norwegian lives in the first house The man who smokes Blend lives next door to the one who keeps cats. The man who keeps horses lives next door to the man who smokes Dunhill The owner who smokes Blue Master drinks beer The German smokes Prince The Norwegian lives next to the blue house The man who smokes Blend has a neighbor who drinks water
With these 15 clues the problem is solvable.

If a daddy bull weighs 1,200 pounds and eats twelve bales of hay each day, and a baby bull, who weighs 300 pounds eats three bales of hay each day, how much hay then should a mommy bull eat if she weighs 800 pounds?

Assuming it's the last state he visits before starting duplications (& he's not making any side trips into Canada), it has to be Maine. Otherwise you would dead end there as it only has a single bordering state. Correct.

What is the next number in the sequence? 4, 6, 12, 18, 30, 42, 60 ... Hint: the number after the next number is 102.

Damn Sam...that was HARD! And I have a gripe with it, beause at one point you have to run possible alternatives - you can't just use pure logic, you have to test (unless I missed something and ended up making it harder on myself). Anyway, I think I am right, since I ran through several alternative answers, and but this one got trapped: All but the German (in the green, 4th house, drinking coffee, and smoking Prince) have a pet specified, he is the only one left, although to be fair, nowhere in the clues is "fish" mentioned, only in the setup, so...

^ Correct
I don't think I had to run alternatives for it, but it's been a few weeks since I solved it, so I'm not 100% sure. I did make one of those logic problem solving grid & chart things to work it out.

;D Cool! There is a point at which you have to decide - both the cat and the water drinker reside next door to the blend smoker, but do they reside together in the same house next door, or seperately on either side...I had to run both options.

I don't get how you know the mother dog's name. Okay, here's a new one. Were I to use a monosyllabic, Anglo-Saxon word that sits atop the 'no say' list, my guess is nothing would change in your existence. You might develop an opinion, have a passing thought, or even choose to be outraged. But, and it's a big but, the choice would be yours. It would not be imposed on you by the word. The word would be, like Kansas once morosely whined, "Dust in the Wind." And yet, we live in a culture that recoils in terror at the word. On broadcast television, the phobia regarding the word has reached the point where even the letter is, in certain instances, no longer acceptable. It has become a subversive letter. According to our network censors, it is generally up to no good. We have been warned. It is being watched! Which brings me to my belabored point. I believe that words by themselves are actually quite impotent. They hardly rise above being noise. Ideas, however--grouping together words in ways that are clever, inane and/or insidious, are dangerous. History proves the wrong idea at the right time can do unbelievable damage. Bad ideas are what the culture should guard against. Which is why I get spooked watching ox News.
