Moon what would you rate the great Gatsby?
What did nick teach you? What did you learn from this book? Did you like daisy? What did the ending mean to you? do you really think nick disapproved of Gatsby? Did you approve of Gatsby? What did each character represent to you?
Why do you think daisy wouldn't leave tom? What would you have done in daisy's position?

I am unsure if i can get the book tomorrow or not No hurry. I've got mine, but there are plenty of copies in our library system, and I can probably keep it as long as I want. By the way, I'm sorry I haven't gotten to your last questions, as well as the second part of my answer to the first one, but I hope to get started on that soon. And to make the changes we talked about, removing the Gatsby stuff to its own thread.

Sorry it took me so long, but the second part of my answer is that this is something that only F. Scott Fitzgerald could write. He was born upper-middle-class and went to prep schools (as well as Yale) with the very rich.
The difference between upper-middle-class and rich it seems, is astronomical. In his first college romance he was entranced with a girl named Ginevra King who was not only rich but also had a physical magnetism that Scott himself wished he had. He also had much competition. Their affair ended, according to his notes, with someone (it's not exactly clear who) uttering the phrase 'poor boys shouldn't think of marrying rich girls.'
When he stumbled upon Zelda later in the same year, who also came from a moneyed background, she refused to commit to him until he had proven that he could provide for her financially. She broke off their engagement.
When he wrote and sold his first novel This Side of Paradise in 1920 he won her back and they were married.
He would remain interested in the lives of the very rich, and worried about his own finances for the rest of his life.

It seems after hearing that perhaps the great Gatsby may have been a bit of an autobiography of sorts

It seems after hearing that perhaps the great Gatsby may have been a bit of an autobiography of sorts From what I've read that's the case in many of his other works as well. But it was also the case for Hemingway. And we're gonna get a little into that in our discussion of The Help, too.

Actually that's the version of the movie I'm excited to see. Baz Luhrman is such a great director, and it has Leonardo DiCaprio in it.

I think so too, especially after seeing the new trailer for it today:
Unfortunately it's not coming out till Summer 2013.

Moon i thought it would be good timing if we watched the great Gatsby perhaps a few nights before the remake comes out so we can compare and contrast while its fresh

I know I'm so very excited to see the remake, my sister actually saw the preview and said she wanted to read the book which is a wonderful thing since I've been trying to get her to read it but she always refused, its not her type of book i told her she was denying herself a great book.

Apparently there are various different covers for this novel,i just looked them up on google but did not see the new one i mentioned. However i did see one that i would love to have, the cover was of a man standing in the dark staring out across the way at that infamous burning green light.

I read the book years ago in high school and saw the movie with Robert Redford as Gatsby, Mia Farrow as Daisy and Bruce Dern as Tom.
Beautifully written book, but one of the most depressing reads, ever. Same for the movie: beautifully filmed, no expense spared in clothing but again, just a depressing story.
I agree that Nick is the only character who comes out looking good. The rest are flawed beyond belief.
I can still hear Daisy saying to Gatsby, "Rich girls don't marry poor boys, Jay Gatsby. Rich girls don't marry poor boys."

It is one of the few books that I could not force myself to continue reading. Now that I am older, perhaps I would view it differently, but I am not sure.

It is one of the few books that I could not force myself to continue reading. Now that I am older, perhaps I would view it differently, but I am not sure. It was one of the required books in my sophomore American Literature class. I didn't find F. Scott Fitzgerald to be a wonderful writer. The book moves slowly and the conversations seemed stilted. I remember taking a test after reading the book and one of the essay questions was, "Describe the era in which the story took place." My answer contained the partial sentence, ..."it was after the war...." and my teacher took off several points, telling me I hadn't said "which war I was referring to!" I was so angry.....I mean, all we had talked about was the roaring twenties and the craziness of the era....I couldn't believe she would think I wasn't referring to WWI. But she told me I had to be very precise when answering test questions. That's something I've never forgotten. But I still think she was being a touch unreasonable.

socal as anti has already said welcome to the bookclub its always nice seeing others here However my views are contrary i loved the story I've yet to see the movie but i thought it was one of the best things I've ever read it was sad and images from the book still linger in my mind. I've read this book perhaps three times and each time the story has changed for me. Socal ours interesting to me that you were required to read this, as for me we weren't required to read anything really in school.i read the classics myself some I've been unable to sit through pride and prejudice I'm unsure why but every time i start this i always put it down even though i know its supposed to be wonderful.others though have become the standard against which i judge other books such as of mice and men. I've only read it twice but I've loved it every time, for me when i read a book how i end up feeling about the book is not entirely based upon the books content but somewhat of the time i have reading the book. for instance if i read a book and have a bad incident in my personal life while reading the book its unlikely I'll read the book again, I'm sure that's crazy but hey.lol also when i was in school my teacher chose me for one of the extra seats she had that was available for the field trip to see of mice and men as a play it was actually surprisingly good.

Moon id actually heard of that did they give a sample of the song I haven't researched that part yet. You know I was thinking they are making the remake so modern with the well known actors and with the soundtrack that its going to pull in individuals who have maybe never even heard of the book and I think its going to motivate them to read the book.perhaps they should do this with all the classics, that's how it was for me with great expectations by Charles Dickens after seeing the version with gwyneth paltrow and Ethan hawk I knew I had to read the novel don't get me wrong the movie was not all that influenced me to read the book I had tried before ever seeing the movie but but always put it down distracted by other things and sadly I still have yet to finish it I guess old habits die hard however that movie told me without a doubt I need to read that book one day lol
