The Stand is my favorite Stephen King novel. It's a post-apocalyptic tale that takes place after much of the world's population has been wiped out by a virus.
It's a lengthy book in its first release, at around 800 pages, but thoroughly engrossing. His publisher had him cut some 400 pages from the manuscript for that one. In 1990 a non-abridged version of 1152 pages was released.

but I might start with Misery first. Misery is one of King's book that is not a traditional horror story like with monsters, but it was excellent. It was very scary. This book club was started about 6-8 months after I gave away four book cases of books because I had no one to discuss them with. Bad timing for me.

I cannot envision a "lively" book. Please help me to understand or give an example of a lively book that is popular. That way I will know what you mean by that.
