Is anyone else sick of this tiresome new trend of having a mid-season break in all of our favorites shows? It seems to me that it started a few years ago with a break in new shows around Christmas time. Now it's become a regular part of the season's schedule with shows having a semi-cliffhanger just after Thanksgiving and us losing our shows for a month or more. There was a time when a show ran for 28 episodes in a season, but that's been cut down to 22-24. They run re-runs at random times during the year so that when the summer break rolls around, there's not much left to watch. I, for one, HATE IT!   Am I alone? |

When did they run 28 episodes in a season?  It gives them time to make more shows is why the mid-season break. |

I hate it, too. And I agree with you that the cut in the number of episodes per season is a terrible idea as well. Countless good shows have been destroyed by this practice, but, of course the networks would lay the blame on the shows themselves rather than their own scheduling practices. People don't work like that. We want to build a relationship with a show and not have it suddenly cut off for two to three months in the middle of the season. We're willing to wait over the summer for the new Fall season, but to schedule a break in the middle destroys all forward momentum. It's like they're shooting themselves in the foot and they don't want their own shows to succeed. It's insane. I remember how I used to look forward to the Christmas episodes of my favorite shows. You don't get them any more because of the hiatus. Sure, take a week or two during the holidays if you need to, but don't expect your audience to still be there if you take longer than that. You've got a financial investment in these shows, and you treat the resource that is so important to your ratings--your viewers--as if their attention is hardly worth the investment of their time or interest. The really sad thing is that by doing this, you're basically saying that you don't care about your own product. So, why should we? |

I was bug about it too when smallville was on they would take A break from thanksgiving time to x-mas a lot.

I hate it too. Sometimes when they take a very long break, I miss the start up date. On Friday, I saw a preview for new episodes of Merlyn. Merlyn was off the air for so long, I thought it was cancelled, so now I am irritated because I must have missed an entire season.
I hope the networks realize that by taking a break from December to March for a new show, the momentum is entirely lost, and the memory fades. For Revolution, I will need to do a marathon of the episodes prior to the second half because of the extended break. Only die-hard fans are going to be willing to do that.
The forum does help me by members alerting us to return dates. Prior to joining the forum, I missed a lot of episodes because of sudden breaks that made no sense to me.

The problem with the mid-season hiatus is that some little details are forgotten. The continuity gets all screwed up. And I, for one, don't have 8-10 hours to spare to watch a one day marathon to get back on the train.
Plus, sometimes, just to keep the show on the air, the networks start airing re-runs, which completely screws up the summer hiatus when, then, the show can't run the entire season IN ORDER.

It is extremely frustrating, I hate when shows that because it makes me lose focus and then I have to rewatch previous episodes so I can catch up so I will be understanding major plot lines and whatnot!

With all the shows on networks and cable, the number of weeks all their progamming is on a mid-winter hiatus, it really messes up the continuity of the program. I forget details, I miss the first new show when it comes back on the air or I just lose interest.

first time I notice them taking a break for x-mas was when I watching smallville on cw or WB years ago.

I would not get confused or forget the plot if the holiday break is one or two weeks. The shows that are going to be off the air for two to three months are the ones I will have trouble remembering details about.
The Walking Dead returns in February and Revolution returns in March. Those are very long breaks. Revolution is new and has a cast of many characters, some that we know are important but have been shown only briefly. Will definitely need a refresher.

How many shows have you lost interest in SoCal? Burn Notice, Leverage, White Collar, and something else.....see, it's been off so long I can't remember the title. Is that good enough for you? |

It's a relief to me.
My TiVo has been yelling at me for two weeks. I could spend less time on the computer, or go to bed later or get up earlier, but I'm pretty much out of time to watch all the shows I have taped. And that's without cable channels. As much as I'd like to watch some of those shows, I wouldn't have time.
I'd like to read the newspaper too. During the summer when there was nothing on I got a lot of that done.

Sounds like you're "taping" too many shows!  I know that during these hiati, I catch up on some of my Netflix movies, but I still don't like the 1 month to several month breaks in programming.  |
