Julia Mancuso ‘skied my heart out’ to win bronze medal, her fourth Olympic medalKRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia — There must be something different about the Olympics, be it a vibe or a pressure or a spirit, because the statistics written next to Julia Mancuso’s name would dictate that she had no business doing what she did Monday afternoon, dancing in the snow. It had been almost a year since Mancuso skied a full slalom run, a requirement to complete Monday’s Olympic super combined. She had not finished on the podium in this discipline, which meshes one downhill run with one of slalom, since — well, look here — the Vancouver Olympics, four years ago. Yet here she was, high above the Rosa Khutor course, a steep slope littered with gates below her. After a blistering downhill run gave her the lead entering the slalom, she needed somehow to navigate the snake’s pit below. “I was just thinking, ‘Stay calm, and ski with my heart,’” Mancuso said, “and I skied my heart out.” The cynic might say that other elements — athleticism, training, stamina — dictate performance and results. Mancuso is increasingly solid proof there is more. She could not hold her lead over Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch, a superb slalom racer who took gold, but she held onto a historic bronze medal — the fourth of her Olympic career, twice as many as any other American women’s Alpine skier. “She sucks up the spirit of the Games and uses it as motivation, and gets really, really excited about it,” said Alex Hoedlmoser, the head coach of the U.S. women’s Alpine team. “She loves to compete here.” Courtesy of Barry Svrluga February 10, 2014, 10:13 AM

They have different colors to distinguish but you always see people try hills they clearly cant do.
There is downhill and Alpine hills as well which have to deal with how the pitch of the hill is. downhill is hard but not as steep and the runs are usually longer. When you race they block off a portion of the slope and its all about how clean and quiet you keep your shoulders. You steer by cutting you put weight on the inside or outside of the ski you stay pointed down the hill and keep the knees close. I ski different when I am doing it for fun I turn more and wider I stop trying to ski so technical. Its different when it is just you and a clock than you on a hill with everyone of all sorts of levels. I don't want to see some out of control idiot who does not turn on a alpine trail going straight down. its not safe for him or anyone. I hate seeing people without helmets I know it looks stupid. but better it breaking than your skull. a few years ago I was cut off I hit a bump went airborne and knocked myself out I may look awful but im wearing a helmet.

I moved the schedule for events to a separate thread because the post was too long and distracting for this thread. Okay.

People need to be more aware of people around them. like don't stop right at the top or bottom. Take the head phones from your ears and listen you can hear people coming up behind you. and giving little kids poles is a huge mistake they will trip them self's they will trip you I am all for teaching a kid but know their limits they don't need to bring a newbie on a half pipe or jump or Mogles. im not the best but I can do a bit of the sport and competed in a few races. im far from Olympic but I get the sport. Keep the kids on the blues teach them to turn so they don't run into people I always hate when parents yell at you for knocking a kid over when its the parents fault and the kid ran into you. I totally agree. We learned the hard way (involving the emergency room) how challenging it is to teach your own kids to ski. After that, we put them through 2 winters of weekend ski team, and they became experts from all that practice.

I like shorter skis I like the Sholom skis over the downhill at least for people starting out. when I go for fun I use skis that just come up to my chin if im doing it for fun or if it is slushy. if it is icy I will use longer ones but I like the control in the short rounded skis. I started when I was four skiing with a harness and my dad behind me. I also think it helps not to be super tall in the sport it keeps your center of gravity lower. but its a person to person thing you find what you like.

I feel the same way about the shorter, shaped skis, especially because I am on the tall side. As I got older I began to lose strength and it became much harder to maneuver my long skinny skis. About 6 years ago I picked up some shaped skis at a ski swap and what a difference it made! Now I can confidently take on harder and more variable stuff, knowing I will get the turns I need to keep my speed down. It is much easier to learn to ski as a youngster, because the falls are less daunting when you're only falling a couple of feet. My son was so little when he started skiing and his skis were so short that he could ski between the moguls instead of over them, and sometimes I would lose sight of him because the moguls were taller. The edge of the chair was about the middle of his back, so my husband had to hoist him onto the chair every time. I hated that. It made me SO nervous. My husband almost dropped him once.

Most places slow the lift when they see kids now. you have to let the fear go if you are scared that's when you will make yourself tired and that's when you make mistakes. Honestly though I like to ski single blacks all day than to burn out doing one or two mogul runs. My brothers a great skier im not but I do ok im better at other stuff.

Women’s Luge: singles
While the Germans had plenty of reason to celebrate, so did the United States lugers. American Erin Hamlin strung together four consistent runs on the ice at the Sanki Sliding Center for a time of 3:21.145 to earn the bronze medal. A small but loud group of American fans supported Hamlin before she took off for her final run and let out large whoops when she finished and they knew she was assured of a medal. Kat e Hansen and Summer Britcher both performed well for Team USA as well. Hansen finished 10th, while Britcher was the 15th-best slider. Medal results Gold: Natalie Geisenberger, Germany Silver: Tatjana Huefner, Germany Bronze: Erin Hamlin, United States

Would not want to see it. That was the nice thing about the weekend ski teams, they got to cut in line and the operators completely stopped the lifts until all of the kids were securely on. Yep, tired. Sometimes it is the first run of the day, but usually it is the last. Mogul runs are mostly penitential for me. My teenage-kneed kids love them, though. Me: "Oh, you're going THAT way? Fine, I'll go around. Meet you at the bottom." I'm not very good, but I usually manage to get through the day. So you like groomed black diamond runs?

The black diamond runs I like are the short ones-just enough to get the adrenaline going, but not enough to cause panic. Not very many of those, though. Dream date is with a long, wide, relaxing blue run with a view and nobody else on it.

Women's half-pipe tomorrow. Sad that the conditions are so poor. I hope they get through it safely.

I need to block topics if we can't block photos. My computer can't handle all this information. Fortunately, it just gave up rather than try to load everything, and at least I can read.
Skating might interest me but I don't have time. Specifically girls in cute outfits.
I haven't seen an opening ceremony since '96 but I don't have the time.

A "forward grab"? If I did a forward grab, it would be completely unintentional, bear little resemblance to the move you are talking about, and likely involve injuries. If I find myself in a terrain park, it is because I took a wrong turn. Frightening. . .
