I can't remember what happened on an episode I haven't seen for three days. Does anyone honestly think I'll know what the pickles are about? So funny! Was Yaphit shown in the episode? I do not recall seeing him. I agree Ed and Kelly did a good job of keeping a straight face and I really laughed when they talked about him reproducing himself. Thoughts on "Home". Her relationship with her father really reminded me of my own relationship with my father in many ways. After working with you for 5 years, my sympathies are with your father. Bortus even LOOKS like Andre Braugher. How is that not him? I know, my brain is equally baffled with this mystery.

Thanks for the information regarding Bortus and Andre Braugher.
And trust me I don't think you would sympathize with him after you found out some not so pleasant aspects of him. I won't elaborate but it's not pretty.

I won't elaborate but it's not pretty. I commented because you have on various occasions taken the liberty of saying very negative things about your father who is not around to defend himself. I must admit it is annoying when I just want to chat about the episode.

Can we stop discussing it then? Thanks. I really don't want to keep talking about it. I have said a few positive things about him like he introduced me to science fiction, it's really hard to discuss much positive when the majority of what I lived through with him is negative.
One interesting note is that both of the two leading male guest stars were both on different Star Trek series and both were doctors on those series.

Fine. I'll do my best to keep my opinions to myself but it is challenging especially when I can relate to some of these stories and they hit me on an emotional level.

Anyways, the episode for Thursday looks like it has a lot of Ed in it so that should be interesting. Hopefully he can get himself out of danger.

A lot of Billy Joel music in this episode. I feel bad for Ed, he found out something that really surprised me. His love wasn't even real, poor guy. He was really smitten with her. The scenes were really well filmed and Gordon definitely learned more about what it means to be in charge. I learned some of those lessons in Junior ROTC in high school.

I'm surprised Ed likes Billy Joel. Seth seems to like the music of the big band era. However, my favorite station plays about as much Billy Joel as it does Frank Sinatra. Even commercial stations aren't successful with this mix of music any more, and it's gotten to the point that the more contemporary performers aren't much help.
Ed was called an idiot. Not surprising since most of Seth's characters are idiots. The exception is Brian the Dog, who was educated at Brown. His voice sounds the most like Seth's real voice.
I was surprised Gordon wanted to be a captain, but even more surprised he is a lieutenant. Isn't that second to captain? His training was pretty much what I expected. I was pleased that he found out how valuable he really is. Kelly handled things really well with him. I think she's actually smarter than Ed but Ed does a good job.
I admire how Ed handled the situation at the end. He'll get in trouble but he did it for the right reasons.
There's no way those Krill ships traveled 20,000 km in a few seconds. 20, maybe. These ships go so much faster when they're traveling long distances, but there's just no way.
Some people called this a parody of "Star Trek" and its various TV series, but based on the movies and clips, and maybe one or two episodes of the original series, I would say this series is faithful to those and just in a different universe.

I knew one day they would revisit the issue of what happened on the Krill ship. It was ironic Janel used technology to pull a similar ruse to what Ed used on their ship. Ed has a sweet spirit and he handled the situation with the Krill in a diplomatic manner. There are people who believe their beliefs are the only worthy ones; otherwise, I would think the Krills' attitude was farfetched. The Krills beliefs put them against everyone else in the universe. I am sure we will see them again similar to the way we kept seeing the Klingons on Star Trek.
Gordon's reaction to the pictures the doctor showed him was funny, mainly because the pictures did not make me think of anything at all. I think the simulation test was farcical because a Lieutenant would have done better than that even if he failed.
It is a coincidence that I have seen advertisements all week that Billy Joel is coming to town and will perform at the baseball stadium.

Here's some more thoughts:
Ed turned a negative situation into a positive one when it seemed not looking good. I love the inclusion of the Billy Joel music, it really went well with the story. Ed definitely has matured quite a bit in some aspects since we were first introduced to him and his crew. He obviously has a kind caring aspect that could easily be used in the wrong way if not careful. He reminds me of myself in certain ways.
Those pictures that Gordon was asked to react to was indeed funny to watch, it reminded me of the ink blot pictures you see in psychological exams. There really isn't one correct set answer to say what it is.
The Krill definitely reminds me of the Klingons as well as the Borg from other Star Trek related series. I love the design of their ships and it was clever how they unmasked The shuttle, I had never seen that technique done before.

I saw a commercial during this show one week where an alien was about to destroy Earth but the food at Jack in the Box was so good he changed his mind.
So if anyone who liked Alara does not watch "Magnum, PI", she was on last night. I didn't recognize her until I saw her name in the credits. She was so cute and looked good in short shorts but was also intelligent. Magnum was on a case where multiple PIs and bounty hunters were searching for a murder suspect who had skipped bail, and only the one who brought him in would get the quarter million. Ken Jeong was one of the competitors. He's kind of an idiot, and that's often true of the characters he plays. He hired an apprentice who wanted to make it clear she was more than an intern. Magnum found the suspect's storage locker and while his nemesis was inside with him (they tracked him there) the girl locked them in and stole the laptop they needed. Magnum's friends tracked her and wrecked her car (no visible damage), and while she was arguing, stole the laptop back. She showed up later in the episode when the nemesis was needed to watch the suspect while Magnum did other stuff.
Also related to "Magnum": I've never seen a planet on this show more beautiful than Hawaii.

Thoughts on All the world is birthday cake:
First of all, the title threw me off a little bit. I wasn't clear on what the episode would be about. The opening scene on the bridge were Kelly asked Bortus about having a shared birthday celebration was interesting. One side note, I have had shared birthday celebrations and I really do not like them. The new crew member seems nice but very guarded.
The crew preparing for the first contact was exciting to watch and we got to see many of the characters getting equally excited. The exploring of the facilities including the medical areas was interesting. The speech that Ed gave at the dinner was nice, he had me curious where he had plagiarized from since he said it was from 9 sources. I thought at first it was a tad rude for Kelly mentioning about her and Bortus' upcoming birthdays. But the reaction by the prefect and the others at the table was very intense.
Seeing Ted Danson as an admiral was okay, he's definitely not one of my favorite actor but it was nice to see him.
The camp that Bortus and Kelly were taken to gave me The Great Escape movie vibes but I'm glad they seemed to get along with the people who were imprisoned there. The guards were definitely jerks to them all.
I'm glad Ed and the remaining crew came up with a clever and very unique solution to rescue Kelly and Bortus. Obviously Kelly and Bortus were not going to be able to escape on their own if they hadn't shown up.
The birthday celebrations at the end were nice including the dancing video of Kelly and Bortus figures with the music was also cute. I didn't realize they had been gone for a month but it was nice they still got to celebrate with the crew.
Overall this was a decent episode, not a favorite but still well done.

I'd rather have had Alara stay around. I don't like this new girl simply because she's not Alara.
It was definitely enjoyable to see both sides being so welcoming, but it couldn't all be positive.
I thought it was strange Kelly mentioned her birthday but that was the entire point of the episode. I couldn't believe how drastically everything changed.
I'm glad Kelly and Bortus were able to help those people but I didn't like the way they rebelled because look where it almost got them.
It was pretty amazing how they were able to solve the problem but I don't see how anyone noticed a new star.
Having a baby born outside that month would obviously have had some sort of negative result. I didn't think it would get the parents rescued, since it was sort of like babies born to illegal aliens in this country. But without the crew's solution it would be as if they took those babies away and sent the parents back.
Ted Danson is also on "The Good Place" but I was happy to see him in another role.

Thoughts on A Happy Refrain:
Dr. Finn/Claire and Isaac as a couple? I never would have expected them to be one but this episode was kinda cute seeing how they went through the ups and downs of dating. I loved learning more about her and her life before the Orville assignment. She is from Baltimore? I never would have expected that! I thought she was from Chicago or another city in New York.
The outfits she wore looked really pretty on her and I loved Isaac dressed up in his shirt and pants, he should wear clothing more often even when in his regular form. The scene at the symphony was nice and I am glad we got to see everyone have a lighthearted time especially hearing the music "Singing in the Rain" that was played several times in the episode.
Bortus looked ridiculous with his mustache but it did get a lot of different reactions some humorous and some in between responses.
Ed gave some good advice to Isaac to help repair his relationship with Claire and it seemed to work for them. I love seeing him as human but didn't like seeing Yaphit in human form. The more I see Isaac in robot/android form he reminds me of a cross between Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation and C-3PO from Star Wars.
So no new episode until the 14th of February so that is interesting.

We got to see what Mark Jackson looks like. At least I assume we did. I disagree about Isaac wearing clothes. He's a robot. Now seeing him n underwear when he wanted to break up was funny. Yes, he was cruel to Claire but he's like Sheldon Cooper and Dr. Shaun Murphy when it comes to relationships. Actually, worse, since both of them have actually learned something. I liked how there was a practical reason for getting back together. I would rather not know what was happening physically you know when.
It's weird that these people are never on Earth (but the whole point of the series is what happens on The Orville) and it's hard to think of them having lives off the ship. There seem to be places for them to go on the ship but most of them are actually simulators.
I was happy to see the green blob but wish they could have done more with him. I really liked seeing him as a man for a change.
I don't want to criticize that excellent orchestra but I could hardly hear the melody and had a hard time figuring out it was "Singing in the Rain". I saw the movie when a PBS station in my area showed Turner movies on Saturday nights. I liked hearing the song at the end. Such an improvement over what other shows play.
The kid who played the piano was good, but the piano music afterward was more my taste.
Bortus with a mustache seemed pointless but it did give the episode some humor.
One of the funniest moments was when Kelly told that story about Ed and Ed looked uncomfortable.
I want to know who was steering the ship when Gordon came in telling the secret that Kelly had kept. no one was in his seat. In fact, if "everyone' was at the recital, who was running the ship? There is a "second shift" we don't know about, like the night detectives at the Nine-Nine who were shown in one episode.

I have to give praise to the visual effects because I love viewing them.
It is wonderful Mark Jackson had the opportunity to show his real face. I was really shipping Claire and Issac because she was so happy. I like his robot uniform and prefer him without the awkward looking too-tight shirt when he is in robot form. I was entertained by the courtship and by the silly and unsubtle break-up. The simulation on the bridge was nice but I did not know they could do that outside of the simulation deck. It seemed like they were getting very wet and I expected Isaac to start dancing.
I agree with Dr. Finn’s description of Baltimore, Maryland and that it is known for entertainment venues. It was nice for someone to talk about something other than the city's violence.
I was happy to see Dr. Finn’s sons in a positive light because it seems they were difficult for her to handle last season. Maybe one of the reasons Claire was drawn to Issac is because he helped her with the boys.
The mustache was amusing. They need to incorporate some humor into each episode because people keep referring to the show as comedy in addition to sci-fi. ***
I saw the episode of “Magnum” and it never clicked that the young lady was Halston Sage (Alara) while I was watching. But I realize it now.

It was ironic I actually went to a symphony concert once in Baltimore to see the complete Handel's Messiah performed, I was very impressed with the atmosphere. I was also surprised about the simulator being able to go out to other areas of the ship, most sci-fi series don't do that so kudos to Seth Macfarlane for coming up with that.

Thoughts on Deflectors:
A pretty decent episode about the new security chief and a surprising love interest for her. The scenes in the simulator were an interesting backdrop for the episode, it reminded me of old war films I had seen as well as scenes from a personal favorite episode from the original Star Trek series.
Kelly made a surprising breakup with her boyfriend and it was a bit sad to see that she chose to confide in Ed about how she felt about the situation. I myself thought it was a little humorous that Kelly was going cold shoulder and indifferent regarding her breakup plus giving Ed her cookie bouquet.
Yaphit was back again which was nice, he was almost incidental but it was nice to see he had returned briefly. We got more references of the Claire/Isaac romance developments and it was nice they are still doing strong in their relationship.
The song " White Cliffs of Dover" was very prominent throughout the episode, I have heard different versions of it so it was kinda interesting to hear it again but a different rendition of it. I even found a video even though the quality is a bit fuzzy and hard to see but the audio is really good of Seth performing the song a few years ago:
There at first looked a murder and it involved an investigation but it had a very sad ending, the security chief didn't get a happy ending for herself that she was hoping for. I think because what happened she will be more guarded around Klyden and very indifferent towards him.
Next week is supposed to be the first part of two episodes and it looks really intense and action packed.

I really liked the music in this episode. Until October, Charlotte had a radio station that played that kind of music (along with Simon and Garfunkel) but I didn't want to listen at home with all the interference and losing the signal late in the day. They couldn't afford to stream. On Tuesday, I found a similar station. I've gone back to the station I usually listen to because I can appreciate the other one more if it's an occasional treat.
I wish they had found more for Yaphit to do.
I suspected the engineer wasn't really dead but had found a way to hide himself. It's a shame how it ended and how things now are between the security chief (whose name sounds a lot like Kelly, which is confusing) and Klyden. Wow, Klyden is narrow-minded, considering what happened with his child.

I enjoy the captain's personality. When he explained to the security officer why she should have informed him about her relationship with the Moclan, I think his calmness was admirable. I thought about what that conversation would have been like if it was Capt. Kirk who was upset. When the security officer told the Moclan Captain that his staff member liked women, I thought it was an idiotic and selfish thing to do. She had been warned about the consequences. Then, she proceeded to lecture the Captain. Ed's comment that he does not see how the Federation can continue to have a relationship with a culture like the Moclan's was very interesting to me. I want to see how the relationship develops. Ed's support of his ex-wife dumping her boyfriend was so transparent, it made me laugh. I was amazed at the way the Captain had the new stealth system tested. It makes sense, but it was very dangerous (and exciting).
