The next episode I watch will have something to quote. This is episode six. It is the first episode I watched from my new TiVo, which the software allows me to do on the older TiVo. The new TiVo is so confusing I doubt I'd be able to watch anything easily there, so I'm glad this feature is available. Or I could transfer. I transferred the episode in the other direction as part of the process of making sure all the recordings are deleted from the older TiVo in case the tech support person is right.
I enjoyed how adult Randall's experience was connected to young Randall's experience and then, in turn, to Jack's attempts to impress Rebecca's father on the golf course. And the references to Tiger Woods. I don't know why Jack talked like a country club was the only way to play golf. I used to live next to a municipal golf course where anyone can play.
I noticed the black waiter at the country club in the 70s.
Randall is getting better at relating to the other council member. I don't like seeing him not be in a situation where he is confident. Now in sitcoms TV dads can be morons, but I just don't like to see that with him.
I liked how young Randall's teacher is helping him.
I was pleased to hear music in Kevin's scene with the pretty girl that should have been part of the storyline with Jack and Rebecca.
The soldier was hot. I liked how she could do anything Kevin could do and Kevin should have realized that. If Kevin can't be with her, the other girl … oh, wait.
Uncle Nick showing up like that was awkward. Kevin still needs his help.
Toby and Kate do not interest me at this point.

Toby and Kate do not interest me at this point. Toby would be fun to watch if Kate was not such a downer. I never understood why he pursued her as hard as he did, but maybe he wanted to "rescue" her and make her happy.

I especially enjoyed Kevin spending the day with his mother. When he was younger, he sometimes seemed difficult and selfish. Previously, Kevin explained to his family that he felt left out because Kate was Jack’s favorite and Randall was Rebecca’s favorite. Since that time, there has been more understanding between them. I enjoyed seeing Kevin take his mother to the star’s house and watch her sing. I was afraid she would talk him into skipping the appointment and was very glad he did not give in.
Kate’s issues are my least favorite part of the episode, but I love Toby’s grand gesture. He is very thoughtful and makes an effort to keep Kate happy.
Randall has always been acknowledged as the smartest of the siblings, but now he is going to have to deal with his issues. He will probably find out he perceives his role in the family very differently than others see it.

The Dinner and the Date
SEASON 4, EPISODE 7 • NEW 11/5/2019, 9:00 PM ON WBALDT 11 • TV-14 • STEREO • CC • DVS
Deja pushes the boundaries of Randall and Beth's trust; Jack and Rebecca invite Randall's new teacher over for dinner. I really enjoyed this episode. The best part was Deja and Malik's fun day. But both sets of parents blamed the other kid. Malik is a responsible kid and he is doing the right thing. I saw how he reacted when his baby started crying. He knew immediately it was HIS JOB. And his parents are responsible people too. I'm not too sure about his dad but I think the dad is on the right track now and avoiding doing what could get him in trouble. it has been a while since I saw the episode. I saw a lit of favorite TV couples and was amazed Randall and Beth were on it. If I had to choose any couple on this show it would be Jack and Rebecca. Randall's teacher said something that reminded me on the last "mixed-ish". The black couple moved into Rainbow's neighborhood and were so happy to see Alicia. until they met Paul. The teacher was the only black person there so seeing Randall made him really happy, and that's what the black couple wanted. Jack didn't handle the situation perfectly but his conversation at the end with the teacher shows what a good father he is. It's becoming a problem for Randall that he doesn't have a good way to learn his black heritage. The attempt to solve this problem wasn't the best. Kate and Kevin didn't help matters.

4.8 Sorry (11-12-19) The various types of relationships were very interesting. Randall helped Rebecca get a job by talking to the employer and teaching her how to use the computer software she needed to learn. Later, adult Randall became worried about his mother because her memory seemed to be failing. She became frustrated with him for talking about it. Kevin disappointed his uncle and when his uncle chastised him, he had visions of his father saying the same words to him. However, when he went to the court hearing to support his uncle, kind words were spoken about him and it made him feel better about himself. He invited Nicky to Thanksgiving dinner with the Pearsons. Deja wants to invite her mother to dinner at the Pearsons. Kate and Toby made a big deal of the baby eating his first solid food. There was a lot to like about this episode. Randall is such a great character, regardless of age. Is there anything he can't do? Actually, we have seen a few situations. I was pleased he was able to persuade that potential employer to give Rebecca a chance. And if anyone can train her on the software, he can. I suspected what appears to be coming when I saw a commercial, so I wasn't too shocked about Rebecca's memory problems. I also have memory problems, but maybe they're nothing. Rebecca trying to put a fitted sheet on a bed reminds me of me. I found something at Bed, Bath and Beyond but even if I can figure out how to use it, I don't know where I put it and I would have to do whatever it is every time I change sheets. Right now I have a regular sheet instead of a fitted sheet, and one that is torn in the right places and is old seems to do better. But the scenes with both parents making the bed, especially with the kids, were fun. Kevin and Nick have traded places. Nick made a great statement in the courtroom. And through the entire episode, he was the responsible one and Kevin was the loser doing reckless acts. The man who had the stroke was so nice. He said we couldn't tell, but I could. He was really trying. Kate now has to lie so toby will be happy about seeing Jack eat his first solid food. Kate was so nice to the man. Deja's "date" was awkward but things were said that had to be. Beth handled things well. Hopefully Deja meeting her birth mother will go well. Knowing this show, it might not. Now I suspect I know why there weren't enough people listed in the closing credits when Deja was shown with two women. That was great seeing Jack talk to Nick.

"So Long, Marianne" is a song I was not familiar with, but I liked it. The song drew an emotional response from Nicky when Kevin was singing along. The story Kevin said Jack told him about the song was actually what Nicky told Jack. It indicated Jack never forgot the good times he shared with his brother even though he did not mention his name. The ten pounds of shrimp as a new tradition was very nice. I was glad Nicky did that. Young Kevin was sometimes a jerk, but as he matured, Kevin has become one of my favorite characters on the show. It helped when he explained that he felt less loved than his siblings. He enjoyed helping people and now feels he is ready for commitment. After he made the decision, he quickly started the marriage and baby. I hope a feud with Randall does not spoil it for him. The scenes when Rebecca looked confused made it difficult to tell one was in the future because she was wearing the same tan coat, hairstyle and eyeglasses. The neck scarf was too similar to easily detect a difference. Miguel knew something was wrong, but he probably did not push Rebecca as forcefully as Randall did. I am glad Rebecca confided in Randall. I think it is realistic that: Beth felt uncertain about her role as Deja's mother when she saw Deja's happiness with her birth mother. Deja was emotionally hurt that her mother was living well without her but could not improve life for her. Toby was upset when Kate revealed she had let him flood social media with posts about the baby's first solid food although she knew it was not true. It made Toby feel foolish. I am not sympathetic that Kate is jealous of Toby's weight loss, but I understand why the text message on his phone upset her. (Online research revealed that Toby had been wearing a fat suit for the show, but Kate did not wear one.) Randall's daughters are very cute and I like them even though Tess sometimes lashes out when she is upset. Not really a big deal, but see the Vent Thread to see why this episode was a little harder to watch. I didn't know the song and didn't particularly like it. I like how songs sound and don't really have an interest in poetry. But it was a nice story. I really liked the scenes with Nicky and Jack together. And present-day Nicky handled himself really well, despite being nervous. As Penn says in almost every episode, "You fooled us!" I seriously thought all of Rebecca's scenes were taking place on Thanksgiving. And wondered how they would find where she was supposed to go. People in general forget or don't know phone numbers these days. I was pleased Deja and her mother got along, but it did bother Beth. And then Deja was upset her mother hadn't been able to spend more time with her. I knew Toby was going to be upset about the truth behind Jack's first solid food. I could not look at baby Jack without thinking on "F8". Vin Diesel's son in that movie was so cute. It was on NBC Saturday. I've never seen them get so much mileage out of a cute baby in a movie that wasn't a comedy about the baby. I liked how Tess came out and got a good response. Kevin was so good with her. It was upsetting to me at the end to see Kevin and Randall not getting along.

After the Fire
Randall shared his vision of how life would be if he heroically stopped Jack from going back into the house. The first thing that happened was Rebecca confessed she had met Randall's father years ago and both Jack and teenage Randall were upset with her. Jack took Randall to see his biological father and they bonded. It was wonderful. The therapist challenged him about his description and Randall started over. He once again heroically saved his father and again Rebecca confessed what she had done. This time Randall did not paint a rosy picture. He was a bitter young man and grew up to be less than honorable. Both fathers gave into their addiction and his brother did not become a movie star.
The acting was stellar and downright convincing, but the story was mostly sad.

Light and Shadows (January 14, 2020) Kate confronts Toby about the messages she found on his phone. Rebecca gets her test results from the doctors.
We waited a long time to see Kate confront Toby about his text messages with Kara who is in his exercise group. Unfortunately, when Kate threw a surprise party for Toby, more information was revealed that caused her to glare at Toby until the party was over. Toby smoothed things over but later dropped a worse bombshell. He said when he looked at baby Jack, all he felt was sadness. Thank goodness, baby Jack later did something that brought smiles to both Toby and Kate's faces. Randall visited his mother to be with her when she took her memory tests. His relationship with Miguel was strained because Miguel felt Randall was overstepping, but they worked it out. While they waited for test results, Rebecca told Randall an endearing story about the two of them sitting in a rocking chair and watching the sun rise. Rebecca does have spatial memory issues, and more tests will be made. When Randall returned home, he encountered an intruder in the house. That was a frightening moment. Kate and Toby do not interest me. I was hoping for something I could enjoy but it didn't happen. I didn't know Miguel was her husband, so that must be because I didn't start watching soon enough. I kept hoping Rebecca would be okay, but of course we've seen the future. She was quite good in those scenes. I was pleased Miguel finally admitted maybe Rebecca wasn't doing as well as he thought. The makeup people must believe that just as with Clark Kent hiding his identity, the glasses must be enough. She doesn't look a day older than when the kids were teens. The flashbacks were really enjoyable. Rebecca with Randall, and Rebecca telling Jack she would not listen to her father. Plus Rebecca looked really hot in that birthday party dress. I liked Kevin's dates. John Legend's concert would have been possible now. I was really disappointed "the one" turned out to consider him a "hall pass".

Strangers: Part Two
I had been waiting for the fallout from Randall's insistence that their mother accept the medical trial, and I enjoyed the drama.
Kevin and Randall: Harsher words were never spoken. There is no coming back from that.
Kevin and Madison: Life takes strange turns.
Kate and Toby: Have mended their relationship and are ready to extend their family.

A Hell of a Week: Part One This episode showcased Mr. Brown's ability to shine in an emotional role. I could feel Randall's pain as he grappled with controlling anxiety while trying to continue his normal routine. The toddlers were very cute and I had to laugh when Jack was trying to relax but the children got out of bed. Young Randall was scared of monsters but his fears escalated after his father's death. He suffered from anxiety and fear of helplessness. Beth and Kevin were the ones he confided in, but he refused to seek professional counselling. I was waiting for him to suffer emotional overload and it happened in an unusual way. Randall was lucky that he was not blamed for what happened to the thief. Where was Randall headed when he left his office at the end? I think of Randall as being the stable, mature person on this show. It's hard to watch him have problems. I liked the scenes with Jack, and Jack with little Randall. I found it weird that he was there when the kids were teens. and then I realized that was a bad dream. I like teenage Beth a lot better than adult Beth. I think Randall went too far with the purse snatcher. It would have been better for Randall to ignore all those notifications, but I guess it's too hard to wonder what those might be if you don't get them. I see we are going to look at each of Rebecca's children and Kevin is next week. And something is wrong with Kate toward the end, so I guess Kate's problems are the third week. I saw a rerun of "Family Feud" with Chrissy, but just enough to know I had seen it. I liked her so much better than Kate.

I forgot to post here Monday and there's nothing to respond to, so it will be hard to remember what happened.
One major storyline was Kevin supporting his ex when her mom died. And I did like her mom. I saw her name in the credits and I have fond memories of this actress. Not only from one of her TV series, but other movies and programs I've seen her in. Her TV series was about a couple having a baby, and she was really good in that. Plus in one of the very first scenes to increase her chances of having a baby she put her legs in the air.
Somehow the scenes with Kevin and Sophia were entertaining even if they weren't all happy.
I remember Fanta and Fresca. These days Fanta is a pretty colored drink but I remember it from when it didn't come in all the colors of the rainbow and it no longer has the "original" flavor.
Sounds like we'll be dealing with Kate's problem next week.

A Hell of a Week: Part Three
Season 4, Episode 13 • New 2/11/2020, 9:00 PM ON WBALDT 11 • TV-14 • Stereo • CC • DVS
Kate finds strength in unexpected places. I did not think I would enjoy that episode that much. And I know why. Rebecca said she was going to start enjoying life and having fun after her diagnosis. She said she and Kate were gorgeous. True. The makeup people think the glasses will work just like they did for Clark Kent but she doesn't look a day older than when Kate was a teenager. I thought the song from "Pulp Fiction" was "Misirlou". But I did know the Neil Diamond song they were talking about. Now I do like Neil Diamond. I was disappointed Rebecca like Mariah Carey. Even more disappointed she liked Alanis Morissette. Jack and Kate making up that story and appearing in the woods was the best thing about the episode. Where did they get those flowers? Kevin wasn't in the episode except for the part we already saw but he directed. I hope Kate and Toby don't actually break up.

Jack continues to be the best husband and father in the world. He is so loving and charming it is no wonder his family mourned him for a long time. Adult Kevin became more like his father than his two siblings. When he has a steady relationship with the right woman, that will become evident. He steps right in when someone needs him. The scene at the cabin with young Kate was not as horrible as I thought it would be. I thought we would see her boyfriend hit her, but he did other cruel things instead. Kate stayed with him because he was the only boy who showed interest in her. I am glad her family rescued her. I liked the sad three digging up the box and Kevin asking if they were coming out to bury him. The drawing of Jack's dream house, Rebecca saving the drawing, and Kevin making the house a reality was my favorite conclusion to the episode. Toby is trying very hard to bond with baby Jack and I think he will succeed. I have to scream and shout older Kevin was handsome!
I really like Jack. I was concerned about Kate and Mark too, which I didn't say last week. It never really got bad except Kate didn't do enough to protect her hand and that made things look worse than they were. But I guess Rebecca did the right thing. What happened to Rebecca's hair? It's usually lighter when the kids are teenagers. I missed Kevin's comment about the digging. I agree about the drawing and then the house actually getting built. I think Toby is really trying. I'm curious how they made a baby appear to be choking.

He will probably find out he perceives his role in the family very differently than others see it. I wanted to say I enjoyed the episode but Randall was in therapy and Kate was too quick to criticize what I thought was a great thing Toby did. In the end Kate could see how valuable that music room was, and we got to see how it was going to be in the future. I liked the first scenes with Randall in therapy. I was reminded of Sterling K's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" appearance again, as I was when J.K. Simmons also made Jake look like a moron. Seeing Kevin with Rebecca was great, both in the present and in the past. In the past I have to wonder if they got the refrigerated items home in time, but it was so great Rebecca changed her mind. Jack remains the too-perfect father while Rebecca is more logical. I really liked the visits to the "Our House" house. That song gets played on my Wisconsin radio station (and Mandy sang it so well). Joni Mitchell doesn't get played as much as I would expect with that music mix. There's just the one song and that one is played (as it was today) during commercial breaks. The national distributor does this for stations that can't sell as much commercial time as others. and the song is one I never heard before I heard them play it, "Free man in Paris". it's certainly not one of the ones people know, like "Big Yellow Taxi". I liked hearing the story behind "Our House". Mandy's voice didn't change at all even as they showed her with Jack.

New York, New York, New York
SEASON 4, EPISODE 16 • NEW 3/10/2020, 9:00 PM ON WBALDT 11 • TV-14 • STEREO • CC • DVS
The Pearsons visit New York City. Regardless of how old she is, Rebecca has such a nice smile. Another mostly enjoyable episode, but in each version Randall was a jerk. Okay, maybe not the one where he was a kid since he was only being a brother. He was my favorite character but that's changing. I'm not saying Rebecca shouldn't get treatment, but she doesn't want it and Kevin's probably right. She's enjoying life and that'll change if she gets treatment. I know it's coming but I can't accept the idea Kevin and Randall will have a failing out. Jack was the ideal father again but he managed to get them lost because men won't ask for directions. I was so disappointed Rebecca missed out on the Met the other two times. She had to wait so many years to finally go there. And all those steps! At her age! Ever since my accident I can't climb that many steps. I liked seeing Rebecca with Kevin's acting teacher but that wasn't going to work. I'm really looking forward to next week and it was so nice to see the beginning of that alternate history. Too bad about the dog.
