I don't want the boys separated longer than 6 episodes, but I would like to see how the Purgatory story plays out if they can do it properly, if everything is fixed by the end of the first episode I'm not going to be happy with it. I need Sam and Dean to both be able to think for themselves and grow a little as individuals. I like the boys together and they can be at their best together, but I think we need to see just a little of each of them trying to fix a problem as they are both working towards a common goal. ( I may not have explained that correctly )

( I may not have explained that correctly ) I agree that you explained it well. While I wouldn't be all that thrilled if everything fell back into place in the First Episode, I think 6 might be a little much. I was thinking more like 3-4 episodes separated. For example, lets say Episode 1 is focused more on Dean trying to get out and then Episode 2 is focused more on Sam trying to get Dean out. Then at the end of that second episode Sam tries something, but the audience has to wait until that third episode to see if it worked or not. TPTB could drag it out a bit where the Episode 1 is more balanced between Sam and Dean. With Dean just trying to survive and Sam figuring out where Dean is and finding out where to start looking to get him out. Then Episode's 2 and 3 could be more like my example above. With Episode 4 telling us if what Sam did had worked. I hope all that made sense. It did in my head.

I hesitated to comment earlier because six episodes of the boys being apart seemed like more than the fandom could handle. But three episodes would still give them a chance to function on their own. A prize to the person who comes closest to the script.

I'm glad you all were able to decipher what I was trying to say, sometimes I think of stuff and then when I type it, it isn't close to what I was thinking.
Waggy, 6 episodes may be a bit much for the boys to be separated, I agree with that but we do have 23 episodes this year and I am concerned they might rush the Purgatory story and not give it a satisfying conclusion. I really want to see Sam have a chance to work and make contacts and to become his own man without Dean's influence. Dean can be kind of smothering sometime with his" my way or the highway" mantra. I think it's time for Sam to have a chance to do things his way even if it just for a short time, I think it would help.
I want Dean to learn to be on his own just for a little bit, Yes S7 was "supposed " to be about the guys having no one else to depend on and they could only depend on themselves, but it made for a very depressing season and I have have higher hopes for S8. I may be living in dream world about that right now, but I want to hope that S8 is better with J.Carver in charge. I honestly don't know if I could have watched another season of the Gamble world.

Spoilers from upcoming Comic-Con:
(everything in quotes comes from Robert Singer)
- Will season 8 hinge on Sam trying to save Dean from Purgartory? "No," Singer answers. An amount of time passes before Dean finds his way back from Purgatory (not specified how long). They're planning on doing various flashbacks through the season showing what happened and what Sam did in that time while Dean was away.
- Why use flashbacks? Because fans usually hate it when the brothers are separated, so that's why they're being reunited quickly.
- What about Castiel? They're still framing that out, but Cas will be back a number of times.
- Will Kevin the Prophet be back? "Kevin is an integral part of the year."
- What does Crowley want with Kevin? The King of Hell needs someone to read the word of God. "Every year we start with a theme -- this is our "Raiders of The Lost Ark" year. This season-long story will be a quest. It's about Kevin and the tablets and the Word of God."
- They would like guest characters like Sheriff Mills, Charlie and Garth back, but nothing is concrete yet. "And there's one new character that we're talking about. It's a monster that Dean meets in Purgatory."
- Who will be the big bad this season? It's another angels and demons year. "It's not apocalyptic but about who can gain control and keep demons in Hell or angels in Heaven."
- I know a lot of you have been waiting for this answer. I'll share the whole thing:
Former producer Jeremy Carver, who exec produced the U.S verison of Being Human, is returning to Supernatural as your new co-showrunner. Will fans notice anything different?
"No. Jeremy gave us a couple of years on the show, so I do think this season will be a little less earnest and a little more the kind of stuff we did in Seasons 2 and 3, before the weight of all the mythology got us."

"And there's one new character that we're talking about. It's a monster that Dean meets in Purgatory." First, I hope we see a stronger Sam this time around in flashbacks compared to the Season 4 flashback Sam we saw. We probably will, but still, am crossing my fingers. Second, I wouldn't mind Sheriff Mills, Charlie, or Garth to come back. In fact, I was kind of hoping/wondering if Sam would team up with Jody or Garth to get Dean back. I'm NOT saying that Sam couldn't get Dean back on his own, I want him too, but it seems like quite a bit of the time, whatever they are doing, it appears to be a 2-person job. So maybe Sam could do all the leg work and get everything together, but then just call up Jody or Garth for back up.

SoCal, thanks for getting this information for us. I have been very curious about the upcoming season. We are more liberal than most fans in our willingness to have the guys separated for awhile. From what I have heard over the years, some fans get hysterical and very vocal when Sam and Dean are separated. That's why I was skeptical about that happening. It sounds like an exciting season, and before SoCal chokes on the thought of being Garth'd again, consider the fact that any hunter that goofy must have a horseshoe up his rectum. The guys should stay close to him.

I was just sorry to see Frank's name not listed as characters coming back in season 8. I was SO hoping we would find out he had faked his death to escape the "big mouths" and would be on hand to help Dean and Sam in the absence of Bobby. Please, oh please, writers/showrunner, please bring back Frank. I will even give Garth a pass if only Frank can be brought back.

I agree that Frank should be brought back. I did not recognize the actor, but he quickly became a favorite. If they bring him back, they probably would want that to be a shock, so they won't tell us ahead of time.
Raiders of the lost ark theme could be fun and I like Kevin. He will probably be as reluctant as Chuck with his role as a prophet. I started to say he wouldn't get drunk every episode, but I vaguely recall him drinking from the flask - I think.

No, I don't really know who the actor is either, but he was great in the character of Frank. Smart, snarky and sneaky....all attributes that would have made him fake his death. I agree that there are probably many things we won't be told just so there's something they can surprise us with during the upcoming season. I just hope that Frank's return is one of them.

According to TVLine, Supernatural has cast a new major recurring role for season 8. Keep reading for details. Liane Balaban has been cast as Amelia, a new recurring character who will be connected to Sam. She is “a tragedy-damaged soul” that “soon reveals herself to be a brave, sweet, smart, sarcastic woman.” I’m sure you’ll remember what happened the last time Dean totally disappeared from Sam’s life: He started going down a dark, demon blood path with Ruby. Clearly women help Sam cope. Balaban has a number of credits, but most recently you might remember her as Anna, the leader of Red Flag on Alphas who couldn’t speak and only communicated through a series of sounds. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I remember her on Alphas. She was not a favorite. Sam and a woman - OK... I was just on The Evicted's Twitter site and some people are already hating on Kevin. They don't understand why Kevin's name will be in the title of the first episode instead of Sam's or Dean's.

Hating on Keving? As long as he is peripheral to the story I don't mind Kevin, but his squealing kind of got on my nerves.

All credit for this interview belongs to TV Guide and Ileane Rudolph. If you really want to show them some love, please pick up a copy of this special edition. This is just one small blurb of the many great things they have in this magazine. The questions are in bold, Singer's answers are underneath. ------------------------------------------------- Helped by a delicious double cross from Crowley, Season 7's finale saw Sam and Dean stake Dick Roman, the Leviathan monster who planned to turn humankind into a culinary delight. But Crowley had a price, and the brothers and their allies paid it in the cliff-hanger. The King of Hell sent Dean and befuddled angel Castiel to a monster filled Purgatory and whisked away his demon subject Med and teen prophet Kevin, leaving a distraught Sam alone up on Earth. We asked executive producer Robert Singer for some scoop. Will Season 8 hinge on Sam trying to save Dean from Purgatory? No. We pick up the season a little bit down the line and Dean will have made his way back from Purgatory. We will do flashbacks through the season as to what happened there and what Sam did in the time that Dean was away. Your fans usually hate it when the brothers are separated. Is that why they're back together so soon? We're aware of that, so [we decided to tell] their stories in flashbacks and have them relate to the current story. The fact that the boys are going to be together pretty quickly was, we thought, a good thing. When Castiel and Dean wound up in Purgatory, Cas did his angel disappearing act. Will Misha Collins go missing from Supernatural again? We're just framing our ideas now, but our intention is to have Cas back a number of times. Will Kevin the Prophet be back? Kevin [played by Osric Chau] is an integral part of the year. Crowley's got him in his clutches. Any hints what he's up to? Well, you've got a prophet who can read these tablets that are supposedly the word of God. Every year we start with a theme -- this is our "Raiders of the Lost Ark" year. The season-long story will be a quest. It's about Kevin and the tablets and the word of God. Will you bring back any Winchester allies next season? They could use some! We love Charlie--and she wasn't seen as a threat to the boys' relationship--we love Sheriff Mills, we love Garth. So we have a pretty good cast of people that we'd like to go to. And there's one new character that we're talking about. It's a monster that Dean meets in Purgatory. Who will be the Big Bad this season? It's basically and angels-and-demons year. It's not apocalyptic but about who can gain control and keep demons in Hell or angels in Heaven. Former Producer Jeremy Carver, who exec produced the U.S. version of Being Human, is returning to Supernatural as your new co-showrunner. Will fans notice anything different? No. Jeremy gave us a couple of years on the show, so I do think this season will be a little less earnest and a little more the kind of stuff we did in Seasons 2 and 3, before the weight of all the mythology got us. Charlie and Garth? Pul-lease. Right now, I'm not very happy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not sure how I feel about this. More angels - blah, blah, blah. I'm tired of angels. And I was hoping he'd mention Frank , who, if he really is gone, really didn't get used enough.

SoCal, I don't know how I feel about this either. It now sounds like we won't get to see Purgatory or only tiny bits. I am ok with Kevin, Jody, and Charlie, I was never wild about Frank but I will take him over the G monster. I was really going to wait until Comic Con and the start of the season before I would start paying attention to all the stupid misleading interviews, promos, and horribly edited teasers, since they are usually so far from what actually happens, I consider to be a waste of time. But now after reading several interviews about how the season is starting all I can think of is more wasted potential.

November - I feel the same way.
I'll try to stay hopeful, but I am so sick of the angels.
And having the season end with a bang - namely Dean and Castiel in Purgatory and then hearing that in episode one.....he'll be out with only flashbacks to flesh out what happened there and what Sam did while he was there? Flashbacks? Come on.
:-/Crap.

I was trying so hard to stay hopeful, now I just don't know, there was so much potential in Sam and Dean to both have an opportunity to grow. Sam could have an chance to team up with someone new and maybe learn new things and maybe get his ideas listened to once in a while. I wanted to see Sam grow!
Dean could learn to depend on himself and maybe let go of some of his baggage that he carries. Yes, I am a Cas fan and I want to see Cas too, but I know that SPN is not about Cas, it is about Sam and Dean and I really wanted to see them fight to get out of Purgatory. I wanted to see how they got out, not something in a flashback.
I have a question, if we are supposed to see this in flashbacks, then will it be the same skimpy crap we got in S4 where it was basically 1 episode of what Sam did while Dean was "away" Or am I incorrect about the number of episodes that flashbacks were used to explain that story?

I just don't like the idea of flashbacks. Why can't they flesh out the whole Dean/Sam/Purgatory story. I mean.....it was a shocking end to the season and now it seems they're just going to gloss over it. Crap.

I didn't want to see flashbacks either, I wanted to see whole episodes with Sam working on getting Dean out and Dean working on getting himself and/or Cas out. Dean and Sam are smart, why is SPN trying to dumb them down? I really don't need to see another season of them being made to look dumb, nor are we as the audience stupid, we don't need to have someone lead us by the hand to help us figure out what the stories are about.
OT- SoCal, the good news is Leverage starts on Sunday.

There are a bunch of BTS photos over at SpoilerTV from the episode they're starting on.....8.03, Heartache. Go take a look, but be prepared. Jared's hair is massive. So massive the sideburns are all but hidden. Here's a sneak peek: If Jared isn't careful, in a few years he'll look like this:
