Van Morrison's music is transcendent:

I knew there was something we could agree upon, and how appropriate that it is something as essential as Van Morrison.



There is a quality so damn spiritual in everything he writes. He and Leonard Cohen are my two favorite songwriters of all time. They both share that transcendence.

If you will indulge me, here are my two favorite stories about Van Morrison, both told to me by a former program director at a radio station I worked at in Louisiana. Van called that moment of transcendence when the music and the song lift you up to a higher space and create something is both bigger and more guttural than what is possible, the 'argh' moment. It stands for that place where the voice comes out primal and visceral.

The other story is that there was a time when Van Morrison was living near Boston, I'm guessing 60s, maybe early 70s, and he would call up Peter Wolf (who would later go on to found The J. Geils Band) drunk when Wolf was a late night radio DJ and request obscure blues songs.

I love those stories. Astral Weeks may just be my favorite album of all time.
