Hi Jen! Hi Moon! At some point during this discussion I expect to take a lot of guff when people come across Tom Cullen, and the fact that, to him, M-O-O-N spells everything. I managed to read chapter two already. This book is very interesting. It's refreshing to read something I wouldn't normally read once in awhile.

Moon is that further into the book that it has those semblances? And I've only seen the movie are they the same because the movie is very long and has a blonde haired fella that spells everything M-O-O-N Yes, it's further into the book, for sure. And that character you're talking about is Tom Cullen, who is mentally challenged, but has a pretty big role in the story.

Yep, pretty much, as I remember. But there are some differences between the two.
By the way, looks to me like a good bit of the miniseries (if not all of it) is on YouTube.

Chloe it def is I love the writing because its concise. King writes in such a way even the side remarks that seem superfluous only enhance the story rather than making it boring or watered down!

I also like the fact that King uses so many pop culture references, like song lyrics, in his work. It gives us all a common anchor in the stories.

So, how many chapters do you want to read for next week? Even though the book is long, the chapters are short. If we read through chapter 12 that would get us just past 100 pages--in my copy of the book, anyway.

Reading through until Chapter 12 sounds reasonable to me.

Sounds good. And no points taken off if you feel like going further.
I'm afraid my new job's early hours have caught up with me tonight. Had to get up at 5:30am today (but I'm not complaining, I love it--other than the early rising time) and I'm beginning to drag. I don't think I'm long for the waking world.
Enjoyed the discussion, and looking forward to our next one!

It suddenly hit me this morning-- I am amazed that we chose this book to follow our last one, as Mother Abigail from The Stand could almost be Owen Meany's grandmother.

I am hoping to be here on time tonight unless dinner happens to be ready at 6pm (again) and/or the power goes out on me. It's been stormy all day and my power just went out for a few seconds as I was writing this post.

I'll be ready. Finished chapter 12 last night.
But, like Chloe, we're about to have severe weather here shortly. If I'm not online at the appointed time, that would be the only possible reason you wouldn't see me.
I just looked on radar, and it looks a lot worse over Chloe's way, though.

The first thing I'd like to mention is the title of the book. The Stand suggests an epic battle in which the heroes are outnumbered and outgunned. It reminds me of the heroic Jewish stand against the Romans at Masada. The term 'the stand' insinuates a defensive position.
Stephen King suffered tremendous writers block while trying to write this novel. Not surprising when you know that he was attempting nothing less than an American version of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings series. There would be two groups, one evil and one good, and a perilous journey into the land of evil, against heroic odds, to save mankind.
There were other influences as well, as I'm sure we will discuss down the line.
There are an awful lot of characters in this story, and at first it's hard to keep them separate. But over the path of a 1200 page book you'll get ample time to do that.
In this first section, the character who spoke to me loudest was Larry, because I know the background he comes from, thanks to my days in radio--the recording artist who suddenly has a hit single on the charts.
In reading this updated version of The Stand, I am amazed how King updated the cultural references from 1980 (the original book's era) to 1990. He did much more than just add 400 missing pages that were excised from the original work. Just the update in eras must have taken an amazing amount of time.
The name of the virus, Captain Trips, most likely is a salute to Jerry Garcia of The Greatful Dead, as that was a nickname of his.

I too like Larry but i also like nick. I believe this was a daunting task for king but as always his writing is superb he makes me identify with the characters, i feel they are real that i know them and that our hopes are the same

King writes much like life happens, he shows you the trivial and the significant he shows you the strengths and weaknesses of each character allowing you to feel for them. Allowing you to love them and to hate them and this ads to the journey he takes you on with his writing, he causes you to be involved with the story he draws you in and makes you feel the story, makes you root for the good and boo for the bad

He's a deaf-mute. But in addition to being immune from the super-flu, he's also brave.
