The novel was originally published in 1978, with its narrative set during the 1980s; however, a second edition was released in 1991, is considerably longer than the first version (1,100 pages compared to 800 pages), and is set in the 1990s. The two versions are essentially the same, with the ending of the second version revealing a time period beyond the end of the first version, involving the antagonist, Randall Flagg. The book was also adapted into a television mini-series, starring Gary Sinise, and was released by the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) network in 1994. Warner Bros. Pictures released an announcement in January 2011 that the company would be producing a movie remake of the King novel.

I felt a sad ache for Charlie sally and baby lavon Id hoped even though i knew it was foolish that they'd be ok i guess i was like Charlie in that sense and Stephen king he has such a way of writing that's so realistic to the way people talk and think that it made these characters infinitely more realistic

What we don't realize at the beginning of the book is that this is the beginning of a post-apocalyptic nightmare. A super-virus, popularly known as Captain Trips (perhaps a salute to Jerry Garcia of The Greatful Dead, who is known by the same epithet) escapes in a secret military installation, and one guard, along with his family escape, spreading the virus.
In an answer to chapter one, which is filled with death, we see the birth of a baby heralded in chapter two.

His wife and baby are awoken in the middle of the night to begin this trek. It's only when we see their car crash into the gas station in chapter one that we realize that they will not be saved, and the terrible power of this virus.

Very true indeed. And how colorful was Frannies response to Jess question what are you mad about Fran?

Yes, and he said that one of his inspirations in this novel was The Lord of the Rings books, in which you have a very good group of people and a very evil group of people both fighting for control. By the way, I found a site that has the book up for free: www.freebook4u.org/horror/The_Stand/

At some point during this discussion I expect to take a lot of guff when people come across Tom Cullen, and the fact that, to him, M-O-O-N spells everything.

M-O-O-N--that spells good!
Now, mind you, I haven't seen this miniseries since it first aired in 1994. But the fact that you have 5 and a half hours to present a novel makes a big difference. You get a lot more time to tell the story. However, there are some major differences between it and the book. Gary Sinise, by the way, is just awesome in the mini-series.
I still think that some of the characters as I saw them in my mind while reading the book were much better. But isn't that always the case?

While I was reading the book the first time I found that it seemed to have echoes of the chapter "Revalations" in The Bible, for me. Hey Chloe, glad you made it.
