Gross you have to pick one of the most disturbing sentences lol Maybe you'll like this one more: It's toward the end of chapter 59, on the day when they get the power restored in the Free Zone. Frannie is missing Nick really bad and tells Stu she wants to pray for him: "He held her, but didn't know if she prayed or not. He suddenly found himself missing Nick very much, and hating Harold Lauder even more than before. Fran was right. Harold had not just killed Nick and Sue. He had stolen their light."

With the explosion and deaths of both nick and ma I feel the whole mood of the novel change, before it was one of far off impending doom the free zone knew who was in the west and a little of what he was about but they began to make a little community for themselves there in the freezone they began to feel at peace with eachother (except for the two crazies roaming about town) and to enjoy eachother again but after nick is killed and ma dies the feel of the novel changes it's grim and determined the doom is encroaching they know the time is coming and that they have to face up to it

And I thought isn't it odd that Fran wants to pray for nick when the lights come on when the last time the lights came on nick said it felt like a resurection perhaps this is nicks way of revisiting the freezone

And what about all ma reveals as she lays on her deathbed What disturbing things for Fran to see That was an incredible scene with Frannie getting a vision of a crib outside the window, her vehement reaction to MA's call for the four men to leave on foot that day, being healed of her pain, Glen Bateman's voice coming from MA's mouth. Wow. And, of course, MA says this line before she passes:

I too was frightened and amazed at the things happening with ma I think it was one final show that even though they had a lovely community feel there that they had still been called to a purpose and if they got too comfortable trouble would soon follow

The things ma shows Fran and the way she speaks I think was like having ice cold water thrown in your face while you're asleep it shakes you awake and jolts you out of your comfort zone.... Things are def changing at this point in the book

Chapter 60 is only about one page long, and seems like a good place to end tonight, if everyone has read it.

When I read that, I figured she meant that Nick is in Heaven, a friend once told me that when a loved one goes to Heaven, it's not goodbye, you'll see them again, but in Heaven.

I believe that's right but I think part of nick is in heaven and part of him is still with the group and that he is like a guardian to the group I know in the movie he was still around and helped Tom out during a difficult time

At first I misread the first section of chapter 60, right after the goodbyes, where Fran and Lucy go inside to make tea. I looked at it wrong, and thought it said," They went inside. Fran put the teapot on. They began to wail."

I love the line from glen Chapter forty three the bald headed sociologist dons his sweat band Me too. It was kind of a jaunty line, which lightened spirits for just a second. If you've still got a sense of humor, there's power in that. I also love that Stu gave the line we've seen in so many war movies,"Come on. Do you dogfaces want to live forever?"

I wondered if when ma says that Fran's baby will have four fathers was she speaking in reference to the four she was sending that those four were going to face the dangers of the west to ensure safety for them all which in turn provides a safe world for Fran's baby to grow up in and isn't that what fathers do could that be what she meant

I like to think that the guys will be alright, because good always prevails, right? ...plus they have Kojack with them. But I still worry about them. I love these stories that make you happy or sad or worried for the characters in the stories. I think that's a sign of a well-written story.
