In the short chapter on Randall Flagg, we see mention of the 1970s kidnapping of Patty Hearst at the hands of the Symbionese Liberation Army, which King has acknowledged as one of the sources for the novel's inspiration.

I also think Starkey was trying to redeem himself I think he was saying something with the location of his death he went down to the cafeteria where the disease first broke out he went down there knowing he could never go up again even if he wanted to he felt solely responsible and I think he was trying to undo his involvement by containing himself down there the way he would have hoped the disease would have been contained ultimately he wanted to undo what he'd done. He wanted to take back his impact on the outer world the impact he'd made with the disease he wanted to rid the world of himself and his project blue he wanted the disease to die down there in the cafeteria but since that was impossible he settled for ridding the world of himself

What do you think of Nick, who is not only deaf, but cannot speak?

I like nick I can tell he is very important he is very smart and I think he is noble even when he found out the terrible news he wasn't worried for himself but instead for people who had hurt him. I think there is more to his handicap than when know right now

And what about Stu and his new situation Stu is pretty much the protagonist of this story, so be sure to pay attention to him.

I think there is more to his handicap than when know right now I think there is a sense of Nick being unspoiled and untainted due to his lack of the ability to hear and speak. That lends him a vulnerability and heart that we take in between the lines in his scenes. In a way, it makes him one of the easier characters to get inside.

Do you think fran is right to be so harsh on Jesse and do you think he is really only trying to maintain his self image is he that shallow I think it's a case of Fran being true to herself. She knows she doesn't love Jesse, so it's the best thing for both of them. Not that Jesse isn't a nice enough guy. Fran, however, will go on to be the moral compass for the group that is fighting for good.

Thanks for putting words to that moon he does seem untainted and instead of letting his disability diminish his heart it has instead kept him separate as you have said and despite the hard life we've learned hes lived being the victim of victims his good heart has never been tainted

Sorry I didn't post anything tonight, I've been dealing with a migraine on and off all week and tonight I've been having some neck pain and back pain as well. All I could do was follow the discussion. I will catch up by next week, I promise.

I have only made it to 245 I'm a bit behind
But from what ive read it appears things are going from bad to worse we see so many dying and the uncaring way they are just discarded ( on the film clip) however what nick did for Jane and the way he carried her was heartwarming and will live infinitley in my mind. It was a beautiful scene at the end of chapter 25 and king described it perfectly.

Nick is a good person even going as far as breaking and entering to feed people who had harmed him and he is always concerned for other people even during this time of panic and crisis

I felt for Mike he was sick already begging to be out of that cell and finally when he was out he looked around fearful at what he saw before him and he takes off running as if he can outrun the sickness little does he know it had already got a hold of him

Hi Jen, I'm finally here. As I explained in my reply PM to you a day or two ago, I did indeed end up having to work late tonight, unfortunately. Earlier today when I took my lunch hour I basically only came back to the house to get online and post here in the thread that I would be at least an hour or two late for the book club tonight, however, when I pulled in, my uncle and cousin were parked in the driveway. They had decided to drop by unexpectedly and see if I was home while they were in town. Sure enough, they left so late that all I had time to do was head back to work without being able to get online at all. I didn't say anything to them about it, but I was a little peeved, since that was the only reason I'd come home in the first place. So sorry. It looks like, as in The Stand, our group has dwindled down to just a couple of survivors, but have no fear, I will be here each week to discuss this book. It's my favorite Stephen King novel, and it's been long enough since I read it the first time, that much of it seems new to me again, so I'm really enjoying the experience. I'll go grab my copy here in a second and see how far I've gotten, and post back on that.

I actually have a few days off this week, so I will make better progress.
