I think maybe I was the only one scared of the monster shouter I think he's meant to be scary, or at least disturbing. " Monsters coming now!" would definitely get my attention. And perhaps he's meant to be a bit of a prophet, as well.

Frannie i think she is strong and stubborn but in a good way she knows what she wants for her life and refuses to bend even if she doesn't exactly know why she does the things she does. Its amazing my view of her has changed as the book has progressed. Before I thought of her as harsh and cynical now I see her more clearly as unwilling to give in to a just settling kind of marriage despite the pressure her "levitating belly" puts on her she is quickly becoming someone I admire!

In the chapters we have just read we see the spread of mass panic and how it causes people to react in ways that only make the situation worse What do you guys think of each of the main characters we are following what do you like and dislike about them Nick and Frannie seem to be the two who are easiest to like, as both seem to have a working conscience. Larry seems talented (he's a musician), but unfocused, somewhat of a drifter. He let his childhood friend Rudy down over money in Encino, but he stayed with his mother till she died, and he did get her to the hospital. We don't know much about Stu yet, except that he seems to be intelligent and resourceful, managing to kill the man sent to execute him at the CDC in Atlanta, and thus escape. As far as Randall Flagg goes, I don't think there's much to like. He's similar to the devil, or some kind of eternal boogeyman.

I really like Nick and Frannie. Frannie does seem strong and stubborn.
I think Larry is an okay guy. I'm not too sure I like his character much, but he does seem loyal (like when he took his mom to the hospital and stayed with her untill she died).

And perhaps he's meant to be a bit of a prophet, as well. I def see it and j wonder if the monster shouters physical appearance is meant to mirror what man kind has done the monster shouter looks foolish and as he runs recklessly away from Larry how he spills to the ground. Much like man kind was foolish when they created the captain trips and how they recklessly spilled that. And so combining the mans foolish appearance with the prophetic messages he shouts brings me to believe that because of mans foolishness the super flu was the consequences

I like Larry something innate about him makes me like him it seems there's something I cant put my finger on about him that is his redeeming quality I think he will prove a vital character later in the book
The chapters with Randal flagg scare me I hurry and read through them perhaps I am the perpetual chicken after all

By the way, J.J. Abrams, showrunner of the tv series Lost has said that the musician character, Charlie, on that show was based on Larry Underwood.

Stu is a wild card we never know what he will do and his combined wit and intelligence makes for a cutting and intriguing personality

In fact, now that I dig a little deeper, he says Lost itself is pretty much based on The Stand.
Claire was based on Frannie Goldsmith, Jin on Nick Andros, and Locke on Randall Flagg.

Moon I just read a synopsis of his character and that sounds very much like larry In the interview, Abrams said that while they were trying to come up with Charlie's character on Lost, they knew he was a musician, and as they were looking for ideas, someone said 'what if he's a one-hit wonder, like that guy in The Stand' Now that Abrams is running the NBC series Revolution, there are a lot of nods to The Stand on it as well.

Oh, I should mention that, like you, Jen, I came down with something while reading this book, and last night my symptoms seemed very much like the beginning of Captain Tripps. Thankfully, I'm a bit better today.

Speaking of Larry and how he took his mother to the hospital I thought rita was slightly reminiscent of his mother (at first) because of the smell of the sachet the same as his mothers almost as if Larry missing his mother so badly had conjured up a way to have her and their normal times back again

That's a pretty sly way to tell us she's about his mother's age. Did anyone notice that right at the end of one chapter Frannie eats strawberry pie, and in the next one Larry and Rita have rhubarb-strawberry pie? Plus, one of the guys in the jail daydreamed about a meal that included strawberry ice cream. I wonder if that means something, or King was just hungry. Let's keep our eyes out for strawberries and see if he mentions them again. UPDATE: I just found another one. On page 68, in chapter 8, Harry Trent (one of the early infected) had a piece of strawberry pie in Babe's Kwik-Eat.

Lol hmm that is odd I think king is wanting us to read between the lines I once read the reason why strawberries are red is because that's the only colors that they do not reflect so it absorbs the red idk how true that is perhaps king is secretly trying to tell us to deflect the lies absorb the truth

I wanted to mention something else about Larry he spoke of all the people walking around reaching for his sleeve,I thought these people knew that mere humans couldn't help their dire situations but still they needed eachother and I thought of larry's way of speaking to nearly everyone he passed was that his way of reaching for their sleeves?

Or maybe his pre-emptive way of keeping them from reaching for his? Whatever the truth is, it makes us like him more that he talks to them, rather than just running like hell.
That's about all I can do tonight. Enjoyed it. My cold symptoms are coming back, so I need to take some more medicine and get to bed.
I'm on page 279. How far do we want to read for next week?

What chapter would that be? I don't have page numbers available! I was gonna say maybe we could read through chapter 42. It will take us to chapter 43. Edit: Nevermind, I'm just gonna step out of the discussion. Reading this has become more stressful than it should because I never know where you guys are in the book. I do not have page numbers on my Kindle or on the website Moon has shown me, so I have no way of knowing where we are supposed to be if you keep using page numbers. I have been trying to ask what chapter that would be and explaining that I do not have page numbers therefore I cannot use them for reference, but to no avail. 99.4% of the human population will die from the super-flu according to the projections from the CDC, so that's definitely gonna play a part. Larry and Frannie seem to have an immunity against it. As we wind down, what do you think for next week? Another 100 pages would bring us up to the end of chapter 25. So, we read until Chapter 26? I ask because I finally got my digital copy for my Kindle and one thing I don't like is that there are no page numbers. If we could move it to tomorrow night at 8, that'd be great. I am on Chapter 26 right now. I have no way of knowing what what the page numbers are as it is not listed on my Kindle.Anyways, have fun reading.
